Most stations around here charge 25c for the air pump; but it will only run for so long. Then another quarter is needed. Some stations still give air for free. But tires, like most else, have evolved too. They don’t lose air as easily as they used to.
That’s why we carry the 12 volt portable inflator in the car !
Those portable air generators were always part of my highway survival kit, along with a jerry can of fresh water, first aid kit, assorted tools, duct tape, DW40 and ( particularly when I lived in Arizona ) spare belts, as well as, a couple of quarts of oil.
Cannot tell you the number of times that stuff came in handy. Not so much for me, but for other stranded motorists.
I started delivering the Milwaukee Journal when it was 5¢/day, 20¢ for Sunday, 50¢ a week delivered. About a month later it went to 7¢/day, 20¢ Sunday, 60¢/week delivered. Just before I sold the route they bumped up the price again, don’t recall the exact figures. Think it got to 70¢ or 75¢/week.

How much just to change the air?

I guess the 12 volt portable inflater cost something? Would you put it at public disposal without charging a fee?
It sounds very clever that we pay for air, we don’t, we pay for using the pump, which the station paid for and will have to replace when broken.

What’s next? The cost of rain water to fill my radiator?

Do any stations still run that nitrogen-in-your-tires scam?

Those of us who carry the 12 volt inflator, along with the other stuff, don’t have to drive around on soft tires looking for an air pump.

Our cars don’t have spares, only an inflator and a sealant kit.
Unfortunately, the four tires on the car don’t auto inflate or deflate as need be. Now, that would be a cool feature…

I stopped buying newspapers when they went up from 10¢.
