The Prisoner and Star Trek (of course) but I also like Rawhide, The Virginian and old western movies, especially those with Randolph Scott, Audie Murphy or James Stewart.(If you look carefully, you will sometimes see Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and William Shatner playing cowboys.).For non-stop live comedy, nothing beats the Carol Burnett Show. For animated comedy – Rocky and Bullwinkle.
M.A.S.H. and Twilight Zone. How was it, we had three channels and always decent shows, and now we have a gazillion channels and nothing fir to watch? The writers just seem to throw papers up in the air, shuffle them into a stack and call it a script. (Except for The Big Bang Theory, which is actually the only show I ever watch.)
I have a wealth of these shows on Fios in Maryland. GET TV, Antennae TV, ME TV and other stations allow me to sit back and end my evening with Merv Griffin (newlyweds Xavier Cugat and Charo were guests last night) The Late Show with Johnny Carson, The Judy Garland Show (it was pretty bad) and so many others.
Many of the shows that were on TV during the 60’s were victims of “camp”, a style in which TV dramas went from serious to silly and TV comedies from silly to even more sillier and surreal. Even cartoons weren’t immune!
Years ago, Spike Jones had a summer replacement show (remember those?)….the first show had a penguin walking towards the camera from the back of the set,,,,it was carrying a sign that said “This Program Is Brought To You In Living Black and White.”
MeTV is carried by an NBC affiliate here and I have the uncomfortable feeling that by August it will be filled with the Olympics instead of shows I like to watch. They’ve already pre-empted programs for political coverage which I’m watching Me to avoid.It’s not that I don’t care about the Olympics, it’s just that I feel very uncomfortable about this upcoming event. Between Zika, sewage in the water and Dilma’s problems this event may turn out to be an epic mess.
“Have Gun-Will Travel”, “F Troop”, “Branded!”, “Petticoat Junction”, “The Munsters”, The Addams Family". I only saw programs on a B&W set so everything was B&W!
Many folks are unaware the signals they receive from cable and/or satellite are compressed and although you think you are receiving a full HD signal, you are not. Federal law requires all network stations to broadcast an OTA HD signal and all you need to receive this is a simple antenna. If you can place the antenna in the attic or on the roof, all the better. It depends on how close you are to the broadcast towers.
If you think you will need a DVR, an excellent unit is available from Channel Master and after the initial purchase price, there is zero monthly support fees! They are a good company to work with and provide software updates as needs arise. Although an internet connections to the DVR is not required, if you have one you receive a comprehensive TV guide function that is equal to or better than anything your cable or satellite provider can offer!
As far as I am concerned, it’s time to ditch cable and satellite. Use the money you save to buy a few DVDs or take your family out to dinner several times a month…
