Well, Mrs. van Pelt, it certainly wasn’t at Mr. van Pelt for he’s at work and Lucille isn’t at nursery school.

And Lucy showed up at school next morning with an impressive shiner.

We never see any consequences of action for Lucy. Explains a lot.

Mother? Wow, that’s formal.

I think the presumption of innocence has been lost by her assertion of the 5th Amendment, regardless of any Supreme Court decisions to the contrary. The 5th may apply in court, but it doesn’t apply to Moms.

She says it like it’s not the first (or last) time she’s ever said it.

This ’toon was initially penned in 1950. This is one of the earlier ones, three years into the McCarthy Era. And, yeah, what is that adult doing in there. Issue a subpoena!

Is this the first hint of Lawyer Lucy that we’ll see if fair regularity in a couple of decades?

You can tell that Mrs. Van Pelt isn’t mad because she didn’t call Lucy by her full name. That’s how you learn what your middle name is, your mother will only use it when she’s mad at you.

Mrs. Van Pelt was actually the only adult that talked back then. Charlie Brown’s mom once or twice, but mostly. It’s was Lucy’s and Linus’s mom, but that all soon ended when the sixties came.

All of the TV shows that they did, all that represented the adults was noise.
