If the NRA has power over congress it has it because enough voters agree with it’s aims to give it power. Another factor may be that many members of congress agree with its aims (scary thought for libs). How is it everyone is surprised that a group of people with a common interest would organize to protect that interest? By the way the gun show “loophole” is a mirage. Even in the very few cases where a private sale does not have to under go a check (between private individuals, both residents of the state) do you really think those knuckle dragging, mouth breathing, Neanderthal bigots (gun owners) would sell a gun to someone who is “undesirable”?
What a dumb cartoon. The NRA has NO power. It is just an organization that tries to keep the 2nd Amendment alive while the REAL tyrant, Obama tries to rid of the 2nd Amendment.
@derdave969“If the If the NRA has power over congress it has it because enough voters agree with it’s [sic] aims to give it power.” Not true. The majority of Americans favor stricter gun laws generally. (http://www.gallup.com/poll/186236/americans-desire-stricter-gun-laws-sharply.aspx) Instead, you might assume, as most do, that Congress is bought and paid for by the NRA.You also suggest “many members of congress agree with its aims.” Even if true, in that case they are not acting on behalf of their constituents, as noted. Indeed, the majority of NRA members favor increased gun control. (http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/01/28/strong-majority-of-americans-nra-members-back-gun-control)So the NRA leadership is not, in fact, representing its members, either. It is known who they are representing: gun manufacturers, who benefit greatly from the scare tactics, and the strange notion that the only protection against guns must be more guns. You also say, “By the way the gun show “loophole” is a mirage.” But you only refer to private individuals, and assume that they won’t sell to someone “undesirable.” That’s not the point of the gun show loophole. The point is that there are people who are effectively running entire gun dealerships entirely through the gun shows as a “private citizen,” and they don’t really care who they sell to. And we know this, because a lot of the guns used in mass murders are, in fact, legally acquired. So the logical answer is to change legal access. If 70% of NRA members agree, why not you?
TomgnIn the early 1940s, the NRA was promoting gun safety, not gun sales. It became the Nazi Revolutionary Army much later. By 1965, they had the Pentagon giving them ammunition for their “marksmanship” program, which they hoarded, rather than using. .I heard their recruiting spiel at a meeting of adult Boy Scout leaders that year, bragging about how if the black ghetto rioted, “the police would close it off, but their members in the Dallas Police would let them in to go door to door and kill every n….. in town. And best of all, those commies in Washington are giving us the ammunition to do it.” Shortly after, the marksmanship merit badge was broken up into one each for rifle, shotgun, etc. and (at least white) Scout leaders who supported civil rights were kicked out of Scouting and the regional head who ordered it was made Chief Scout Executive. They are losing their grip on their Hitlerjungend now, with gays permitted, but at least one denomination with a strong civil rights record is still forbidden to sponsor a troop.
Reference, please. I’ve read dozens of history books about WWII, and I have NEVER heard the assertion that “most of [England’s] guns were left at Dunkirk.” In fact, I have just been reading a history which makes the case quite compellingly that Britain’s war machine was hugely powerful, much more so than people say now.I strongly suspect your assertion is nonsense, but I’m always willing to look at evidence.
The idea that you have a gun in America to stop tyrants is hilarious. We have a ruling class that runs corporations and manipulates our politics. We have corporations that are people. We have unlimited secret money flowing into politics. Go get your guns and stop the tyrants on wall street if you are so damn patriotic.
Yep, 300+ million people in the US, 100 million + gun owners, and only 5 million in the NRA, and given the amount the NRA passes out to politicians, let alone the million plus LaPierre has been paid annually over the years, it ain’t all coming from the members, not even close. It’s the manufacturers who come up with the cash.
So, with 5 million gun folk,or 5% of owners, how come they do weild so much power over lawmakers, federal and at lower levels??
