This is definitely becoming a more progressive, contemporary strip with the characters reflecting growth and willingness to take stands that are those of emerging and intelligent adults. With that being said, what about Tiffany and Piro? And those who were hoping for the story line about Mr. Gray you have one more day.

That’s Tiffany’s problem in the nutshell, and Crystal’s wise to call her on it. She believes that she has no worth beyond a short-lived beauty, and that she has to market herself like a commodity or expire on the shelf. More evidence that instead of a mother she had a series of her Daddy’s trophy wives for role models.

This is a surprising statement from Crystal who not so long ago gave a 1950’s era blame-the-victim speech to Tiffany, telling her essentially that wearing an outfit that showed (I think) her midriff meant she was “asking for it” when Leslie Knox sexually harassed/intimidated her. (Apparently Rosa, who wore more “modest” clothes, was not to blame for being attacked by him in a similar manner.) BTW, I wonder whether Pitts High ever disciplined Leslie in any manner?

The Oklahoma paper that carries the LUANN Sunday strip didn’t print this cartoon; they printed a past cartoon that had Luann waffling between going to college in a year and a half or getting married (to Quill) right after high school and settling down to raise a family.

She just keeps getting gooder and gooder and better and better and more gooder. .She will soon be nearly as perfect as Prudence, nearly as lovely as Luann, nearly as cute as Crystal, nearly as realistic as Rosa, nearly as determined as Delta.

In a significant way, it would seem to me that such t-shirts would be eye-openers for the potential wearer. What more blunt and poignant statement that youth and physical beauty is fleeting does one need? But it appears that those who wear this type of slogan ironically don’t think beyond today, or think that they will remain young and “hot” forever. Then they end up being rather sad middle-aged “Forever 21” shoppers :-), or they try to reclaim that youthful appearance with plastic surgery and botox (which also ends up looking rather sad itself, most of the time, in my opinion).I dunno. On the other hand, maybe these t-shirts can be taken as simply celebrations of youth and vitality — a kind of “go for the gusto while you can” expression. Tiffany certainly wears it (and pretty much anything else, for that matter) well.

Still, I’d hate to see her become one of those women who winds up hanging out in bars waiting for loser dudes to pick up on her and buy her a drink. I hope the Evans have her grow up and have an interesting life doing good things. It’s just that she reminds me of a couple women I’ve known. I’m just babbling, don’t mind me

I had a Luann dream last night. It was short so i remember it. A man was reading a comic and said it was Maglu. The main character was Bernice dressed in a warmer weather version of how Magoo was dressed in the beginning of Magoo’s Christmas Carol: conservative but classy overcoat, neck scarf, and a fedora except that Bernice’s fedora was straw. I think the name Maglu for Bernice was partly a pun since Bernice does not see (observe and understand) social interactions. Hey, i might be able to pun when i am asleep! Partly i think the rakishness of the hat combined w the overcoat makes me think of possible layers of Bernice, and the scarf echos her fascination w Piro. Maglu (Bernice) was being hired by the Dean to investigate possible sexual activity in the university, which echoes conversations here. I have no idea what happened then but think the dream ended.

I have mixed feelings about the garments in and of themselves, but for Tiffany specifically i have only one take. Tiffany has not been raised to appreciate her own more important strengths, but to instead embrace empty assets like fame and transient physical beauty. For this reason, on her, the garments become self demeaning and she lacks the selfawareness to know that, but her best friend does know and that is why Crystal is trying to help her become more aware, because Crystal knows Tiffany better than pretty much anyone else. Every single one of us has things which are our own truths, and we can not assume that our personal truths must also be the truths of others because that is not only self-centered but it is downright naive. On that score, as in life so in comic strip. So, while i could easily imagine a joking person in the shirt and an athlete in the pants, they read differently for me when i factor in what we know about Tiffany, and that her best friend knows her best. I hope for growth in Tiffany; she has valuable strengths that she needs to recognize and appreciate to appreciate herself as a person.
