Ox is the one who woukd make a good councilor in my opinion.Anyway, at the last minute in yesterday’s strip i decided to be serious and then silly, so will repeat because i shoukd have just waited a few minutes for the day to change but will plead tiredness:People have said that the strip is currently being done by father and daughter. Have you considered that the awkwardness THEY might have in tackling together certain character age-appropriate topics like sex might be what is being seen play out even more than the characters’ development? Perhaps, if so, they might be best served by sometimes having the characters draw down the window shades so the readers can just decide for themselves how much might have happened.

There seems to be a lot of reading-into going on, so instead i am going to be silly and PLAY: Gunther becomes a monk. He makes money for the monastery by designing and creating dog costumes that sell out rapidly at unbelievably high prices to socialites. In the distant future he marries Luann and her pediatrician husband. She met him while doing educational charity work at a children’s hospital. They are a great couple. Tiffany becomes a social cultural anthropologist. If she is not going to be a movie star her father decides unsuccessfully to try to direct her toward archeology by getting her an Indiana Jones hat. She ignore the hint, but the hat looks good on her, goes well with her glasses and pulled back hair (future Tiff who has a different look but can fancy herself up for fund raisers when needed). No one is surprised when she becomes department chair at age 45. Bernie realizes that she is self-sabotaging and joins the Navy, serving as a petty officer at first then finishing college and serving as a career Naval officer. Go Blue Jackets. Quill eventually becomes a producer; he gets talked into doing promos for tge various characters’ interests, and writes a PBS special on who they were and who they became, with the many surprises life holds. Oh, and Delta eventually does become president, first from VP when the president passes away, and then resoundingly on her own after her time is office has been a great success. She declines being in Quill’s PBS special, which reviewers question as unbelievable.

Here, try these two sentences isolated from the rest of sukie’s post …

    Gunther becomes a monk.

In the distant future he marries Luann and her pediatrician husband.

Brother Gunther presides over Luann’s wedding to a doctor.

Yes, Bernice, “claim her?” If you thought Gunther and Tiffany were dating and you also thought that Tiffany were sleeping around, then wouldn’t the friendly advice be to dump her? But oh – that would mean Tiffany would be free to date Piro. It is sadly rare in this strip for friends to actually act like friends to each other.

We have always known that Bernice isn’t really a nice person, from the way she constantly insults her “best friend” Luann, both to her face and behind her back. However, from the ignominious, devious, and unbelievably cruel way she tries to manipulate two other supposed “friends” for her own (purely fantasized) advantage today, we now see that beneath Bernice’s apparently cynical and mean exterior there lies a dark and evil soul of pure slime.

I knew some Gunthers back when I was in school. Not insane, not an “angry young man,” not consciously trying to insult anyone (in fact, quite the opposite), certainly not a villain, and, if you were to break through the walls they put up around them, certainly not boring individuals. Quite complex and introspective, actually.- Gunther has these traits:- Shy, introverted- Insecure- Hasn’t yet matured yet (I will use that phrase rather than “acts immaturely,” as there is a significant difference.)- Academically savvy- Socially rather clueless and inept, especially around girls- Does not pick up on signals from the opposite sex until they hit him in the face- An only child, and as happens often, is thus somewhat of a sheltered mama’s boy, though that has improved as of late- Nearly always wants to play by the rules. Whatever the rules are, he abides by them.- Deep down, is very self-analytical and self-critical. This type of person is quite complex and usually has a great desire to be a “nice guy” and a “good person.” Due to the other qualities above, however, sometimes ends up defeating this, at least to outward appearances, mainly due to social ineptitude and insecurity. Then ends up playing that event over and over and over in his head and torturing himself with it, wondering what he could have done differently — or more often, realizing where he went wrong (as he’s intelligent to a fault), and torturing himself with that realization, then is completely unsure of how to fix it.Here we have seen prime examples of all of these traits:Jan 26 – 27: Is intelligent and insightful when it comes to seeing others’ issues. Has no phoniness in him, so can pretty easily figure these things out from an analytical standpoint. Got Quill thinking the right way, and fast.Jan 28 -29: At the same time, has no clue what to do with his own relationships, insecurity and shyness. And is well aware of his situation and shortcomings.Jan 30: Tortures himself because of it. Also, if anything happens, it’s usually because the female comes on to him (or so he thinks, in this case), not the other way around.Feb 1: Trying to be a nice guy (and, inside, he is a nice guy, if you cut through the layers to get to know him). Thanks Bernice for the opportunity to meet, treats her to whatever she wants in the cafe, offers to talk about subjects that she is interested in.Feb.2: A bit of a mama’s boy, and is somewhat threatened by others that look a little “dangerous.”Feb.3: Plays by the rules. Thinks Bernice is accusing him of breaking the curfew rules with Tiffany. Reacts somewhat angrily (and, I think, somewhat inadvertently, just blurts out a bit of an insult to Tiffany), trying to protect himself. Again, he wants to be the “upstanding citizen” who plays by the rules, and at the moment, Bernice is threatening that.Feb. 4: Hasn’t been, and is not, picking up on signals at all. (And neither is Bernice right now, for that matter.) Ox turns it in the other direction. The Gunther / Bernice haters need to tone it down. You just have to understand how these people work. Some can (and, as with some I’ve known) sometimes have become best friends.

I find myself wondering if EITHER Bernice or Gunther will grow into being able to function constructively without having some strong outside influence/structure always present. Guess i reflected two with which i have some experience in my sleepy imagination. (Our part of the family tends to have many sailors. Some of them did well with structure while some did not.)I find it very sad to see these characters devolving instead of using what they have learned about morality to create their own internal structures. Each also seems unaware that there is at least as much to learn from others outside class as in it.Anyway, despite Tiffany trying to tease Bernie about the scarf, i consider both Tiffany and Piro to be victimized within the conversation. For all we know Piro only on rare occasions sleeps on the couches of others. There is no reason so far to think that has happened more than once on this hall. Nor is there yet any reason i can recall to think that he is not a student. Like the rest of them Tiff is working on growing up. Old patterns can get in the way. There are stages where a young person is better off away from the old crowd in order to grow. She fell back into an old pattern with the teasing. Some here talk about deported characters. Certainly, removing characters or reducing their presence allows for the introduction of new and sometimes richer characters. If there were to be a vote today i would go for “deporting” both Bernice and Gunther to more highly structured environments where they coukd be happier. Oh, and when Bernie leaves someone should realize that she was accidentally given a 1963 dorm rules book.Just one more thing:Arrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

LOL! Yes, it becomes a community after a while, same as the rest of the communities in people’s lives just with the primary focus being the comic, but with the commentators being themselves. It is kind of cool how the topic parallels the “degrees of structure” theme which has come up w the personalities of these two and the dorm rules. Some of the characters just scroll right past the rules, others enjoy structure or fear not having it, while most of the characters pick and choose as they figure out more who they are.

Ugh. This strip is just getting worse and worse..Somewhat OT – .I suspect that the Evanses have flushed Bernice’s Rule Book and rule enforcement down the memory hole, never to be heard from again. Trotted them out just long enough to show Bern’s moral conflict (hypocrisy). If Bern didn’t throw the book (pun intended) at Tiff and Piro for their flagrant rule violation, and get Piro banished from the dorm forever, then she’d be in a completely untenable position as a rule enforcer. Better to forget the whole RA thing.

I have to say this is the healthiest I’ve seen the comments area in some time. My 2 cents: comments such as “borringgg” while perfectly allowable, don’t make any cents to me. The same for the mysteriously concocted “Trufan” club. Those who don’t voice their opinions loudly and emphatically are not necessarily blindly following the Evans gospel. Day traders go nutzo over short term hills and valleys, long term investors are more patient. Many here take silently the long view. Fans they are, but they are not without their disappointment in the strip content and direction, they just don’t shoot flares into the night sky so quickly. But again, nice to see the varied, funny, serious and insightful comments.

Oh the blunt force, confusion, and subtly of this particular strip is just dripping. First Bernice is talking to Gunther about something he really has no idea about. He is interested in Bernice, and she is not very clear on that, if at all. But she thinks because he has been kind to Tiffany, who needs it in spite of her general snarkiness, and spends time with her that they are a “couple” when it is clear to Gunther at least that they are not. But Bernice persists thinking that Gunther knows, or cares about Piro, whom she really has an obvious hidden interest in, and even goes so far as saying that, in light of Piro’s sleeping in Tiffany’s room for a period of time, Gunther should go in and “claim.” Tiffany, which then goes back to confusion. Gunther has no romantic interest in Tiffany, the one he wants to develop is in Bernice, and I for one hope they finally get together, although I always like to point out that Rosa might come back soon. And good old Ox perceives this as what it certainly looks like, a date. They are both nicely dressed, having an animated conversation, and they look good together. This is a brilliant arc here.

Does this campus have a health service? Right now i am very disappointed in both characters’ lack of maturation on very basic social skills but Gunther seems to have a better network to fall back on to help him learn. Nope, i do not mean Quill — at least not primarily Quill. Bernie needs more help in sorting out her life. Hense, the health service question. Strange sometimes to care about characters, yet it happens w good strips just as it does w good novels.

Gunther is interested in Bernice and thinks/hopes/fears they are on a date. Bernice is interested in Piro and hopes to get info from old acquaintance Gunther while they have tasty refreshments. Oxford thinks Gunther and Bernice are on a date, is pleased at notion, and offers coffee, while perhaps harboring thoughts of Tiffany. Tiffany has no idea what is going on. Piro is asleep in somebody’s dorm room. Luann and Quill are fixated on each other, but in a negative mode. Pru is nowhere to be seen. What next?

Implauisble… I have to agree with you… both Gunther and Bernice ARE becoming the new “villans” in the comic. It is a long time coming situation for Gunther (he has been showing more and more signs of this), but it is more a surprise (at least to me) concerning Bernie.

I think all of this is hilarious and folks are taking it too seriously. Bernice is being very calculating and strategic. She wants to find out if Piro has been spending a lot of time (not just one night) at Tiff’s. But she doesn’t want to give any hint of being jealous because she knows that Tiff has a vindictive streak. So to get the info she wants she goes through Gunther who hangs out w/ Tiff;. If Piro was coming in and out he would notice. But she paints it as a gesture of concern for Gunther to make sure that Tiff doesn’t see her as the jealous competition. In some ways Gunther and Tiffany are well paired. They both have an element of cluelessness, she academically and he socially. Bern and Piro might be a match in that they may share an element of ‘street smarts’.

You see only the top layer — Gunth, the “boring” nice guy…Ox, the “typical dim-bulb jock” — but the more you get to know such a person, the more you find that there are many more layers to peel back. And there are plenty of girls that find that intriguing and yes, plenty interesting. The world doesn’t necessarily conform to the notions of “boring” and “interesting” that you are trying to impose on it.

We all get to learn other ways of perceiving the exchanges by reading the comments, some vastly different from our own views yet just as valid. I wonder what it is like for the script authors when they read comments. These are, in a less independent way, their “children” under duscussion. Are the comments read and are they ever revelatory? How often do they come as shocks, with many readers perceiving the situation or characters differently from the authors? How often might they show the authors directions in which they are going that the authors did not yet recognize were actually happening? That must in turn raise the question of whether to correct course (which can feel forced or artificial, and stagnant) vs going with the flow for a while and then trying an approach which arises from the story itself.

[7 / 2]Strangely, I feel compelled to give two votes today. The first (the “7”) is my rating of the story itself. I think the story is becoming quite fascinating. I have a feeling this arc is not going to end well for anyone concerned. The other vote (the “2”) is for my rating of our two protagonists. They are BOTH being obnoxious and annoying IMO. For me, this unkind behavior has been brewing and simmering for quite a while in the “new” Gunther. I do not like who he is becoming inside. But, it is much more of a surprise to me how Bernie is changing. Sure, she always had some faults, but generally I liked her character. But, for me, her current actions are bordering on creepy, and are IMO rude. I think this is a pretty amazing plot twist, and is definitely a “hairpin curve” of a type I would never have anticipated… even though Sheriff gave us a heads up about it. I imagined all sorts of other curve balls, but definitely not this one.

I used the term “True Believers” for those posters who always defend Team Evans no matter how unbelievable a story they come up with and no matter how unpleasant their “good” guys in the strip tend to act, and I was called out on it. So “Trufans” it is.

Claiming is a term that is being used to show that someone has a superior romantic interest over someone else. It’s silly, but no reason to hate a comic character over.

Nah, I think your take on this will (rather typically, it would seem) prove to be incorrect.

-Ok, now back up a step. Yeah, it would be nice if these characters talked to each other and all.

But where exactly would someone go to find Piro to talk to him? Each time we see him, he’s crashing at someone else’s place.

“Nah, I think everyone can say what they want here. Everyone is allowed to dislike Gunther and Bernice as much as they want.”You are confusing the right to do so with my opinion that it is not the best approach to do so.

I enlarged the last frame and it looks a bit as if Bernice is actually surprised at what Ox is asking, about how the ‘date’ is going. It probably didn’t even occur to her that Gunther (and Ox) see them getting together as a ‘date’. She just thinks of Gunther as that guy from high school, part of the old gang that she hung out with…

New poll up: Is Ox the most perceptive person in the room?

Pick One1) 26 votes – Other2) 23 votes – Gunther3) 17 votes – PiroOther: Pick one what?; Ox; Puddles; to be determined; Academia; Ford Prefect, since that’s obviously who Piro really is; Gunther and Tiffany; If those are your only choices, you need to meet some new people; Crazy Cat Lady; Bernie Sanders; Or the other loser, behind Door Number 3; Bernice, like Luann, needs to just chill for awhile.Career, not guys.; The Tiffster (I’m a guy!); Quill!; Both, of course; neither; chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream; Zane

Implausible, maybe the easiest thing when someone thinks you are a mash-up might be to claim to be Kuato from Total Recall. I had to try that once when they thought a guy who was not only a different gender but lived about 2,000 miles away and i were the same person. Claiming to be Kuato shut the person up fast. Then again, i might have scared the chiggers off her… For the record i figured Birdsht was disarming the original person w that silly reply. A little silliness can sometimes go a long way, and i am very glad that you two decided to not fight. Thank you both!

So by being incessantly, relentlessly negative, you see yourself as a necessary counterweight to the more pleasant, positive posters here, is that it? Interesting.Yes, balance is important. What I am suggesting is that you practice it in your own comments. Being relentlessly negative means your own comments lack balance.

Oh, Frank’s a sweetie pie! Kind of a gentle uncle sort. I will worry when Pru next tries to manipulate him. I think the closest he will get to any descent will be having to navigate conflcts w his family w that boarder causing problems.Real life has enough burdens in it. If you have mot yet gotten to the point of having sequential declining older family you will later see part of what i mean. Dragging down fictional characters who do not deserve it would only reduce the value of that escape. So, i hope you are trying some dry humour that just did not come off well in the writen word.

That is a very cool dream. I’ve had ones like that, which bend the constraints of time, but mine are usually the opposite: I am a version of myself at a much younger age, while everyone else is the age they are now. Somettimes that comes across as being completely natural, nothing weird about it. Other times, I feel good because I’m in great shape whereas what the heck happened to everyone else? LOL. And still other times, I just feel out of place, a fish out of water. I’ve seen friends and places I’ve known from the past, as they were in the past. Aometimes they intermingle with people I know in the present, and that is almost always presented as being completely natural. Time doesn’t really exist in a linear fashion in many of those dreams.Yours has the really cool aspect of seeing your future wife as a girl, and not wanting to mess with the fabric of time and the natural progression of events. That’s like a time-traveling sci-fi movie, but more personal and meaningful. Very cool. I am convinced that there is a lot more going on in dreamworld than just silly little “movies.” It’s its own valid reality in itself.

Amidst all the praise about how wonderful all the beautiful and colorful fabrics are, someone needs to point out that the Emperor in fact appears not to be wearing any clothes. Sometimes literally.

“But the pleasant posters are pleasant all the time, so it is a balance.”That’s a concept that some people subscribe to that has never made any sense to me. Why does pleasantry need to be “counter-balanced” by unpleasantness? Why do some people feel that good vibes have to be offset by bad vibes in order for their world to fill whole, or real?How/why is being negative fun? What on Earth do you get out of that, that is any way fulfilling?" At least, more fun for me." Well, at least you have enough self-awareness to realize that your peculiar idea of fun is not the forum-as-a-whole’s idea of fun. I’d say that it’s not even close, really. Fortunately, most people hold a rather opposite view. And if you think that somehow, if by being constantly negative, you’re doing something particularly noble or needed, I’ve got news for ya. That would be a nope.“Does it really matter if I make negative observations though?” Excessively, incessantly, relentlessly, day after day? Uh, that would be a yep. It does matter. Because that is what forum trolls do; it is one of the defining characteristics. If you don’t want to be considered one of those, then it would be up to you to change your tune. Thanks, at least, for trying to cut out or at least tone down personal attacks on the Evans’; that’s a start. Next comes the follow-through. Go for it. Look for the good rather than the negative. Try it, you’ll like it.

Implausible, i have thought upon your comment about Frank and can reach only one conclusion. You are hopelessly infatuated by Nancy. Having seen that famous documentary, Cool World, which can not be doubted by anyone who knows tgat Las Vegas exists, you have decided to pattern your plan of action upon Holly’s example. You intend to work with Pru, using mind altering two dimensional substances, if needed, to get poor Frank out of the way. Well, Buster, it will not work. No matter how much we stretch your legs here in the comment section you will never stand taller than Frank in Nancy’s eyes, so surrender your nefarious plot and remain three dimensional. Do not harm Frank. Feeling taller? ;-)

@Seismic-2:Interesting that you bring up yin and yang. As someone who has studied Daoist philosophy, I don’t think you know what the concepts mean. Not really. For extremely basic starters: Know how the symbol has light and dark merging into each other’s territories? Better yet: Notice how each one of those territories has a circular area in it that is opposite (black has a circular white dot, and vice versa)?Yeah. Think about that for a while. Because if you’re relentlessly, incessantly negative all the time, you are not following it.
