Catsup or ketchup? In either case, Broomie is showing shockingly bad taste! –Everybody knows that you put mustard on a hot dog, but NEVER ketchup/catsup!

As I recall, ketchup was invented in Malaysia. It was quite a different thing then, with a different pronunciation. I got curious one day and looked up the origin of the word in the American Heritage Dictionary.

    (checks further)

Hmm. Check out the origins of ketchup as Wikipedia has it:

In the 1690s the Chinese mixed together a tasty concoction of pickled fish and spices and called it ke-tsiap.

By the early 1700s, the table sauce had made it to Malaysia, where it was discovered by British explorers, and by 1740, it had become an English staple. Although today’s ketchup is tomato based, it did not appear until about a century after other types [first in America].

Webster’s Dictionary originally preferred catsup, then ketchup.

I love finding out things like this!

I’m not going to retype all that. Webster’s originally had “catchup”, with “ketchup” as an alternate spelling.

But these hot dogs are made with wagyu beef, truffles, and guyere cheese. They’re served on croissant rolls, and the catsup is made with heirloom tomatoes from Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche.

The original hot dogs had one end filled with

grain. They couldn’t make both ends meat.

(does putting ketchup on a pun help?)

Youse guys have the origin of this word all wrong.

It comes from an old race track where there was

a horse named Tomato that always got off to a

    slow start. The question was:

Would Tomato catch up? (from Beetle Bomb)

Sigh. I like ketchup (catsup, too. Speaking of which, I wonder what the cats up to)…

And I like it with mustard (brown only) on my hot dog. I know, I’m a rebel.

You must be from Chitown, Sisyphos, where it’s really close to blasphemy to put ketchup on a hot dog. Mustard, onions, pickles, jalapenos, tomato wedges, celery salt wrapped with french fries, but heaven forbid ketchup!

I only put ketchup on or in garbage, but never anything edible.

I like the brown mustards too. I also like honey mustard, stone grond mustard and anything else that isn’t French’s prepared mustard.

Broomie sure does have a nerve ordering hot dogs in a fine dining establishment. I wonder if they’d even have ketchup - or hot dogs for that matter.

Or maybe it’s that my puke tastes like mustard. Somebody else might find the flavor delightfully tangy, but it’s one that I personally don’t care for.

I know mustard never tastes like the regurgitated contents of _my_ stomach. I can tell the difference between vinegar with sulfur-bearing compounds and hydrochloric acid.

N.B.: Even though Heinz is the most widely sold ketchup in the world, may I recommend Hunt’s instead? Unlike the former, it doesn’t use high fructose corn syrup and the tomatoes in it don’t taste like they’ve been burned to a crisp.

BALD I don’t know what you do in the uncivilised world, but in New England it is a capital offence to order baked been with catsup. Matter of fact, I don’t believe they sell it in Boston.

Fritzoid, you must be using French’s yellow mustard which not only tastes like puke but looks a bit like infant poop.

My brother has catsup on everything - even scrambled eggs.

Oh, and there’s an old BBC show called “The Vicar of Dibley” that had an old woman who put catsup on cake icing. Mm mm mm.

I don’t eat the yellow mustard either. I have a 5 or 6 varieties of mustard in my inventroy including horseradish, stone ground, honey, spicy brown and a sweet hot mustard. Then there’s the McCormick’s dry mustard that you add water to. Add very little water for a nice think and hot mustard that’ll taste great with corned beef & cabbage.

Beans is the only think I put ketchup on. I don’t even put it on fries. As for ketchup on eggs - that’s disgusting!

cdward, it was certainly French’s Yellow that set my attitudes about all other mustards, but at this point I don’t like any of ‘em.

Although ketchup is my default on hot dogs, if I’m someplace where I can do it I like Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, and black pepper (instead of the ketchup, not in addition). Sort of a Bloody Mary dog, without the horseradish.

I also consider chili dogs (cheese, no onions) to be one of Nature’s Perfect Foods.

Finally, I like hot dogs with peanut butter (truth). Before you jump on me for that, if you’ve ever had pork with peanut sauce in a Thai restaurant it’s basically the same flavor combination.
