argythree -there is a difference between a patient telling a doctor about the problem, and the patient telling the doctor his own diagnosis (and often even dictating treatment).
I have a friend who is a nurse, who HATES Web MD. She says that people would come in with the most basic symptoms, and try to tell her that they have some drastic disease that has a mildly similar – but not the same – symptom!
Side note: my husband had appendicitis, and I agree with Rob Rex.
I love the drug commercials that tell you to tell your doctor what he should do. My doctor went to medical school and I didn’t, so why should I do his job which I don’t know how to do anyway.
You should never go to either a Dr. or a mechanic and tell them what is wrong. If they treat/fix what you tell them to, and you still have the problem, it is only your fault.
Develop Autodocs capable of diagnosing and treating the 10,000 most common ailments, then build 100 million of them for starters.Have them updated as improvements are developed. They never get drunk, distracted, old, shaky, demented (unless hacked and that is why hacking should be stopped) or sleep.
I work in the Quality Department of a New England hospital as a data analyst. Doctors are NOT omniscient. The government forces them to spend more time filling out paperwork (or computer screens) than they actually spend with patients. And most of them don’t have enough time to spend reading up on the latest developments in their specialties. Use the Internet sites, such as WebMD as a starting point for questions to ask your doctor. If your doctor isn’t interested in answering your questions, walk out and find another doctor.
I have my Dad’s burial flag, dog tags, hat, and medals in a display case on top of a bookcase beside me! He is long gone now, but I will never forget what he sacrificed for our country, and the rest of the free world…

I hate doctors who don’t want to listen to anything their patients want to tell them…

If he really had appendicitis he wouldn’t be smiling. I’ve seen what it does to people.
