Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for July 07, 2010
Transcript:
Danae: I... I... feel kinda weird. Ekert: Really? You should be feeling nice. Kate: For her, that is weird. Lucy: Very! Danae: OK, something's wrong here... I'm having strange thoughts now... Foreign words ringing in my brain that somehow make sense... Kate: Oh, my! What words? Danae: Like... like... charity and compassion. Kate: Is this some sort of mind control you're doing to her? Ekert: Urp. Lucy: And can you keep doing it? The Ekert mystery continues...

I don’t think Danae is going to be able to handle this. This is going to be like Spock feeling emotion.

I usually wait until my morning email to read this one, but this storyline has me hooked!! Who called it yesterday? Looks like they were right! As for Danae: INFORMATION OVERLOAD, CAN NOT PROCESS!!! LOL!!!

What have you done with our Danae, and how much will it take to make you stop it?
ARF2 almost 14 years ago
I think I called it first: Sixth comment yesterday.
ksoskins almost 14 years ago
The Ekert could stay well-fed just wandering around in Arizona.
lazygrazer almost 14 years ago
Ekert definately looks abit plumper thanks to Danae.
…This is gonna be good!
Varnes almost 14 years ago
Charity? Compassion? So, Eckert is a Democrat?
Varnes almost 14 years ago
I do love the skull in the heart T shirt…..uh, what happened to Petey? Is this the most we’ve ever seen of Kate? I love Kate!
harrietbe almost 14 years ago
Wonder how much charity and compassion Danae will be able to handle. Might be a life changing experience if she really allowed herself to act on these new “concepts”. Nah! That would spoil the comic strip. It’s going to be fun seeing where Wiley goes with this.

With so many words per panel, Non Sequitur really needs to be displayed at a much larger size.

The more bad he eats the darker and badder he will become.

spock does feel emotion, after all he’s having an affair with uhura!

Varnes: I believe Petey is still chasing a squirrel.

Nabuquduriuzhur, the Greek word from which charity derives is actually “caritas.” There are four words in Greek which we translate as “love.”

celeconecca almost 14 years ago
How long before cute l’il Ekert turns evil? They say you are what you eat!
rmbdot almost 14 years ago
Ekert is something akin to a dementor, it would seem.
imjustso almost 14 years ago
Be afraid. Be very afraid. This is not the Danae I know and love.
js305 almost 14 years ago
Is it just me? I’ve seen this character before. I don’t remember just when. This little fellow is dangerous. Think about it: He feeds on others bad thoughts and grows and grows, much like government…
So, what does he eat after all the bad thoughts are gone?
ChazNCenTex almost 14 years ago
Of course it’s a flying elephant - a flying gerbil would be silly. It had to be something that could get bigger - like as big as an elephant - from feeding on all those bad thoughts.

Etnier - click the comic, and it blows up bigger.
Is it me, or is Ekert, spelt backwards, with an “i” “Trekie”?
Hmmmmmmmm … could Ekert be a Vulcan of some sort?
DesultoryPhillipic almost 14 years ago
Lord knows the democrats have enough bad thoughts to feed the elephant for a lifetime. Several lifetimes, actually.
geneking7320 almost 14 years ago
If any of you remember “Lil’ Abner” by Al Cap, he once had a story line about kigmes (sp). They were small creatures that had targets on there behinds. If you kicked them you felt better and so did they. I can’t remember where they came from or what happened to them.
Nelly55 almost 14 years ago
this is a side of Danae I thought I’d never see
not sure if I like it
hmmmmm

Danae has a personality shift and the masses don’t know what to do with themselves. That’s the power of comic strips: able to make the average reader notice little changes in a character and fear them.
What do I think? It’s about time! She’s the reason I skip this comic for weeks at a time. You’ll never make me say that I want that jerk back! Keep her like that for a few months–maybe even a year!
cleokaya almost 14 years ago
I hope Danae’s dad gets a chance to experience her transformation before she reverts back to her old self.
MatureCanadian almost 14 years ago
Scary, very scary. Can’t wait to see what happens next. Thanks Wiley!

Actually, this one is neither a Heffalump or a Whoville Horton. Seems to me I remember now it might be one of the Sunday thread characters. Can’t remember all the characters off the top of my head, but the one about heaven, with the dog that changes from being a dog to a duck to a elephant fairy? Somebody help, Wiley?
wicky almost 14 years ago
Ekert a democrat, what a laugh, unless he asks for more taxes.

Allan V “Is it me, or is Ekert, spelt backwards, with an “i” “Trekie”?”
It’s not just you. I noticed that yesterday. I have this odd thing about seeing if unusual words or online nicknames spelled backwards spell something real. It rarely works that way, though.

Again… PLEASE stop trying to bring politics into this.
And some of you are reading WAY too much into this. There’s no influence or homage to Dr. Seuss much less Star Trek. That would require far more thought to it on my part than I have time for! :-)
Ernest Lemmingway almost 14 years ago
I know Wiley just said there’s no Dr. Seuss homage, but it does look a bit like the thing that hatched in “Horton Sits On A Nest.”
Whatever this thing is, I like it! It’s giving Danae a taste of new sensations, strange ideas, and…by all that’s sacred, compassion! Just don’t send that thing after me. >:( I worked too hard to become this bitter, misanthropic mess I am today for some Ekert to come and turn me into a person who cares.
Justice22 almost 14 years ago
Thank you Mr. Miller. Folks, let’s leave politics to the editorial cartoons. Likewise for the personal attacks. Just call me Ekert.
lewisbower almost 14 years ago
Danae, Danae, Danae. Let’s get real. You want things. You want power. Does compassion and Charity buy these. Think about the last guy who spoke charity and compassion. Why that was 2,000 years ago. Look at him, murdered by his friends and neighbors before he was 35. Things and power or compassion and charity? Which do you really want? POWER! POWER! POWER!
jsprat almost 14 years ago
a hungry heliphant!
So nice you want to smack him, or lock him in a shed.
oish almost 14 years ago
Hmm, first send him West Bank, Afghanistan, and have a sit down at the next world summit and we might be able to achieve world peace.
If he ever gets too big, we can always send him to Canada to slim down.
ububobu almost 14 years ago
Ekert reminds me a little of the characters in Dumbo’s Pink Elephants on Parade. Nothing political there.
kfaatz925 almost 14 years ago
Ooh, how intriguing! Looking forward to the next installment…

I think Danae is going to short circuit…

Ekert is a schmoo reincarnated maybe?
mizcraig almost 14 years ago
Ekert will eventually explode and Danae will return to normal.
mizcraig almost 14 years ago
I agree. More of Katie and Petey.
Trisha_Evenstar almost 14 years ago
I was right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bmonk almost 14 years ago
Considering this is Danae, that Ekert may soon feed on so many bad thoughts that he explodes.
Dapperdan61 Premium Member almost 14 years ago
Better send that little guy over to the middle east ASAP
Gigantor almost 14 years ago
Come on, guys. It’s fairly obvious. Ekert feeds on bad emotions and gets bigger with every bite. This story is heading toward Ekert becoming way too big because there are so many negative feelings out there from everybody, so much food for him. That’s why he was locked up in the first place.
Logicman almost 14 years ago
Waiting for the other shoe – does he feed off positive energy from nice people or just eat the bad stuff making everyone good? Who would lock away such a creature? Sigh ….
myming almost 14 years ago
box up ekert and send him to the “leaders” of the world !

Mature Canadian - not “Horton Hears a Who” but “Horton Hatches the Egg” – “I said what I meant, I meant what I said –an Elephant’s faithful 100 percent”
MatureCanadian almost 14 years ago
Okay wingzy. Agree, however, think Ekert still looks like the character from the Sunday thread ……”Homer” argh, my brain has turned to mush, cannot remember the name of the ele-fairy.

Wiley, please get someone to put a handle on the coffee mug for sale on this site. Otherwise it looks like a roll of toilet paper. Sorry

Don’t want to see her change, Danae is my favorite comic strip liberal. Noooooo!!!!!
