Porcupines do NOT “shoot” their quills. They can relax what amounts to hair follicles in their skin and if you touch the barbed quill, it will release from the skin without harm to the porcupine. You would be amazed at how many people are afraid to be within 10 feet of the poor animal. Even some people who should know better (like zookeepers at the Santa Ana Zoo in CA) wouldn’t allow a North American Porcupine to be exhibited to the public for fear that he would shoot his quills at the patrons.
