Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for August 08, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "When a person pauses in mid-sentence to choose a word, that's the best time to jump in and change the subject!" Calvin: "It's like an interception in football! You grab the other guy's idea and run the opposite way with it!" Calvin: "The more sentences you complete, the higher your score! The idea is to block the other guy's thoughts and express your own! That's how you win!" Hobbes: "Conversations aren't contests!" Calvin: "Ok, a point for you. But I'm still ahead"

Anything is a contest, if you wish it to be. However, you may find yourself on an empty field.

I know a lot of people who think a conversation consists of waiting for the other guy to shut up so they can talk again. You can see they’re not really listening to what’s being said, they’re just thinking about what they’re going to say next.

The World Champion at Calvin’s game; Chris Matthews of MSNBC. ‘Hardball’ drinking game; every time Matthews interrupts a guest, you have to do a shot of your favorite 80 proof drink. All players die of alcohol poisoning within the first 30 minutes of the show. BTW, I’m a hardcore liberal.

Calvin, you’ve described my supervisor exactly! Except he doesn’t wait for a pause in your sentence. He’ll interrupt you to interject his own personal story that you’ve heard at least a half a dozen times before…

We interrupt this conversation about today’s Calvin and Hobbes to bring you some other comic strips.
To view the following strips in the archive and help GoComics generate revenue, please click on the blue archive links below. To view the strips directly, click on the images below or stretch them.Today’s topic was an ongoing theme in Peanuts, especially in the early years. It is still an ongoing topic in other comic strips. Perhaps it involves something that more than a few people have experienced. Here are five examples, in chronological order:Peanuts (August 26, 1953)Peanuts (March 2, 1985)Calvin and Hobbes (April 8, 1993)Dilbert (October 9, 2007)Pearls Before Swine (October 4, 2014)Carl R over 8 years ago

Good morning, and a lovely morning it is!
It is sad with all the “devices” people are glued to, a real one on one conversation is rare today. What is truly unfortunate is when the opportunity presents itself to start a “real” conversation, one of the involved parties rudely answers their “device” with another text or some BS and totally ignores the “real” conversation…

So that is how debates work?

@neverenoughgold: It happens here on GoComics all the time. You try to talk to people, but they get distracted and start looking at comic strips.

Me? I raise my hand, because I begot a house full of women. If I wait for a pause, I’m four to five subjects behind. The hand is instant.

I hate it when people just abruptly change the subject. It means they are bad listeners.I have to admit, I’ve done that a couple of times but only because I might have been uncomfortable talking about it, I’m only human.xxx

Some people talk and talk and find no end. When you don’t interrupt it, you never can say a word!!

I am still close with an old group of friends. We have known each other for over 40 years. We all gather two or three times a year to talk, drink too much, and tell the same jokes. Interestingly, none of us has a cell phone, let alone a smart phone or an i-anything. It is really about conversation and each other’s company. The same is true of another group of friends with whom I go skiing several times each winter. It is immeasurably rewarding, on a personal level, to have actual conversations with people.
