What kind of place is it, that a married lady shouldn’t be there? The sign says “Tavern”, not “Meat Market”. A man can stop into a pub and have a drink alone and nobody questions it (well, memere might). If a woman does the same thing, people assume she’s looking to get hit on. (Of course, 90% of the time a woman alone in a bar WILL get hit on, but that doesn’t mean she welcomes it.)

Amazing what a difference a tiny comma can make, but some languages do not have punctuation marks at all.

I suspect this is a strip Johnny Hart would never have done. I don’t miss him.

(Cognizant: One of the great contributions to the world by Western Civilization was punctuation. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean had no punctuation until they borrowed commas, question marks, periods, etc. A Chinese woman once told me it is a pain to read classic pre-punctuation Chinese now.)

The reverse is also true pschearer… and I do miss him!
