Regardless of PJ’s reasons, we were so disappointed with the first Hobbit movie that we have not seen the second, nor will we see the third. “The Hobbit” is such a great story that what they did to it for the movies should be criminal.
I have found that while usually, I prefer the book to the movie… there are rare occasions, however, when I actually prefer the movie to the book. Then there are those times when I enjoy both versions equally well.Sometimes the reason for which medium I prefer is that the movie is too different from the book, sometimes it is because the movie is not enough different from the book, or it may be the very nature of how the movie is different that determines my preference. I do recognize, however, that a movie has to be different from the book it is based on simply because of the difference in how long it will take to watch a movie vs how long it takes to read a book.I must say that I did enjoy the Lord of the Rings movies as well as I enjoyed the books.
Yes- much (though not all) of the added material in the movies comes from Tolkien’s own further writings. He never really stopped rethinking his own stories. And the changes from first drafts to final published version are even greater.In the first draft of LOTR Frodo was Bingo Bolger Baggins and there was no Samwise. Saruman did not yet exist, and Aragorn was a Hobbit named Trotter.In the first draft of THE HOBBIT, Thorin was named Gandalf and Gandalf was named Bladorthin
