There’s got to be some way of blaming this on Bush.

I have been doing that most of my adult life. While there are exceptions, generally our “intelligence” is used almost exclusively for getting whatever we think we want (as opposed to what would be good for us, our progeny, our species as a whole, or the whole planet and all its children – sigh), or simply rationalizing our selfishness and shortsightedness. The effect is that we appear (read: are) foolish and heartless. Moreover, we lack the desire for introspection and self-honesty which might lead to correction. Myth, metaphor, or real, there is a deep metaphysical and philosophical truth in the image of a Jesus who laments, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing."

A young lady living near us was sent to an expensive for-profit “Christian” school for middle and high school. She got straight A’s for 7 years in all the mainstream subjects as a math-science major. (If she hadn’t gotten straight A’s, mom would have pulled her out and sent her (and the tuition money) to some other place.)

But the college counselor there messed up her college admissions so she ended up at the local public community college, where after placement tests she ended up in Algebra 1 and similar middle-school levels in other subjects.

Private for-profit education: The best grades money can buy. Education: not so much.

Don’t worry about it – as soon as Trudeau’s latest pet project, Elizabeth Warren, gets the government to pretty much pay off everybody’s student loans, his salary can be raised to whatever he wants; it’s not as if the students will be paying for it.

As a student of both history and archaeology, I appreciate your summary. I’m also aware that when someone starts to actually talk about history, everyone’s eyes seem to glaze over. Explains why we keep repeating the same sequences….

" consider Vietnam which goes back to Truman actually.".Consider the fact that Truman’s actions or inactions did not force us to send hundreds of thousands of Americans over there to kill and be killed..Furhter, our dislike of Communism as it has always been practiced justified us not aligning ourselves with Ho Chi Minh. Our desire to give our allies some leeway is reasonable..If we are going to blame Vietnam on one man, pick between McNamara who lied to Johnson and Johnson who kept a liar as an advisor. Johnson was a better man than he is given credit, but he committed the USA on incomplete and false information without due diligence to verify what it meant. McNamara knew it was false but did not tell the president since he figure he was already committed and we needed to fight Communism because he figured it would take over the world unless we did.The truth is that Communism was inherently so unstable that it would have failed many years earlier if we hadn’t propped it up for humanitarian reasons.

Redkaycei Repoc.@DavidHuieGreen “Ho Chi Minh was NOT a communist until Truman refused to aid the Vietnamese people and the USSR said they would. Then Nguyễn Sinh Côn changed his name to Ho Chi Minh and took up the communist cause. If Truman had helped I think he would have just as enthusiastically embraced capitalism.”.Or was he?Or would he have? How do we know these things? The voices in our heads?Do we really assume he was completely neutral up until he needed a handout and then became a loyal lapdog to the hand which fed him?Me not think so.
