I’m with Calvin. Not only was I forced to pull what seemed like acres of weeds, I was not even given a dollar!Of course I was given a roof over my head and the joy of verbally abusing my four younger siblings! Fifty years latter I STILL dislike yard work:)

When I was a teen I hoed weeds in rows of cotton or peanuts for 75 cents an hour.

I bet you’ll earn a ton of money when you graduate from college.

Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes have been outed as frauds by Calvin’s dad. He said they can earn money by helping with the weeding. Calvin doesn’t think he needs the money that badly to do the task asked by his father.

I pulled weeds as part of my chores or I did not get my 50 cent allowance. I was lucky, many of my friends only got 25 cents. My first real job paid only 65 cents an hour. This was in the mid 60s.

My mom used to pay us 10¢ a row for weeding the corn in the garden. We could also pick potato bugs off the potatoes for 1¢ per bug.

Even after 4 years of college, my first job (after Army beginning at $78/mo) was $2.50/hr – only a fraction of today’s min. wage. Chalk it up to inflation.Anyone else remember the Carter era? Pantry inventory (using the oldest last) was very simple – just use the can that was several cents cheaper! That method no longer works as items in a store no longer have labels – they are just scanned, but at least most items have use by dates on them to make up for it.(I remember the small country store days, buy a box of cereal and find an EXPIRED coupon inside!)The good old days – weren’t!

I used to pull weeds (or spray to kill them) and mow lawns to raise a few bucks when I was quite young. There was something about the lawnmower I fell in love with, and after graduation from college, I built a fairly successful lawn & garden business out of our family hardware store..Today, I can afford to pay someone to cut the grass and take care of the weeds; but there are times when I miss it…
