I remember, in the 70’s, when snowmen were happy because the left wing statists were claiming that global cooling was going to kill us all. Apparently that didn’t work to get to the real goal of government making all of our decisions for us so we went to global warming. Unfortunately, this too has been debunked. Perhaps in the next thirty years we will try global static weather.
Global climate change is a fact. Both natural and man-made kinds have happened in the past and will continue to happen. An example of man-made climate change is the urban heat bubble, in which temperatures in cities are several degrees hotter than the surrounding rural area due to the absorptive nature of roofing materials and asphalt. The simple fact is that the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere has changed dramatically in the last century. For instance, CO2 concentration in the lower atmosphere has gone from a baseline of 280 ppm to a current concentration of 394 ppm. That change combines with other changes to affect the global energy balance, along with changes in cloud formation and potential changes in air and ocean currents. The resulting changes in the climate may be large or small, they will certainly vary locally, and they are difficult to predict.
The real question is not whether the climate is changing (it always does). The real questions are HOW FAST the climate is changing and in WHAT WAYS. We would hate to cause the next wave of mass extinctions due to climate changes that are more rapid than what ecosystems can adapt to. We would also hate the disruptions in human life that come with changing climates. They would be extremely inconvenient and come with great expense in both lives lost and monetary cost. Humans are adaptable, though. We would not be among the species that become extinct. Since the possible effects of human-accelerated global climate change are extensive, it may be wiser (and less expensive) to reduce the degree to which we change the Earth’s atmosphere.
Survival of humans is not guaranteed. If population pressure or murderous dogma gets bad enough, someone might release bioweapons which killed us all or nuclear winter might manage to freeze and starve all of us. Or our antitechnology bias might leave us open to a dinosaur killer asteroid or comet, unable to detect or deflect. It is even possible an imperialistic, humanicidal group will come to power. It probably won’t but could.
