So, Shannon did indeed “MacGyver” them out of the closet… – And it looks like the firefighters came just in time…. – Sounds like the answer to a riddle… What’s neither green, nor gold, but red all over?… Lots of possible answers… The credit card.. The look on everybody’s faces, there…. – And it would seem that Aunt Toni will have to try to explain how “You take the good, you take the bad.. You take ’em both, and there you have….”

And now Brad will be the laughing-stock of the station…just as some predicted. I thought Brad and Toni would get out of the closet with just a firefighter “friend” like Brad said, but this is far funnier! ;)

Okay so I was wrong about Shannon, and I am happy to be wrong. She gets in the way, but she is a real, good child, who clearly loves Bwad and her aunt, Toni, and has some terrific instincts and smarts. Great., lets see what else happens. BTW I hope they get married this year sometime.

I have reluctantly come around to the generally accepted view that Toni’s brother is an unfit parent. Not, however, because he leaves his daughter with others while he seeks employment opportunities – that’s what single parents do, all the time – but rather because time and again he endangers his daughter’s life by leaving her in the ‘care’ of these two blithering idiots.

Well, at least Shannon did good rather than the bad I (and others) had feared yesterday.Panel 2:“15 minutes later”? That, plus a few minutes for the rescue, means a response time of nearly 20 minutes for the PFD—nothing of which to be proud. But perfect comic timing.

    @Wesley and ReallyBad:

I thought of that back when Brad first broke the lock knob off.

Maybe Toni’s card was one of those credit cards with a metal-saw edge. If it took 15 minutes, maybe Shannon actually sawed through the deadbolt. (Of course, they could’ve had her do it with Toni’s Swiss Army knife…those often have a metal saw/file among their folding tricks.

Why do some people continue to insist the lock was a deadbolt? It was obviously a dinky, cheap, interior door latch meant for a bedroom and easily shimmed, not a security deadbolt which would have had a keyed obverse. And who puts a shaet lock on a (hall?) closet? If you’re keeping valuables and weapons in there you use the previously described security lock, with a solid core door, and reinforced door frame, with no exterior pins._________Now comes the question; why has Shannon been taught to access locked bedrooms?

Why would B and T get laughed at by the other firefighters? They were smart enough to get out of the closet, they don’t need to tell anyone how they did it. They are engaged in amorous activities which is normal for an young adult couple. I don’t see anything to laugh about.

I am concerned that it took the FD over 15 minutes to get there. Good thing there wasn’t a real emergency.

    Ya know…

Maybe it took so long for the fire department to arrive because they were actually putting out a fire at the time they got the call, and they just dropped by when they were done. After all, Brad’s idiocy takes a decided 2nd string to their real job.

    … said,

Brad did say he was calling a “friend”. That’s not 9-1-1. A 9-1-1 call should have been responded to much sooner! But calling a friend to say he (Brad) needed help with a problem would not result in a rush.*Unless, of course, the “friend” also has the hots for Ms. Daytona!*Looks to me the “friend” brought the whole crew in order to embarrass Brad or impress Shannon. (I doubt the latter.)

“It’d be nice if Evans would have shown how she unlocked the door, because the credit card trick doesn’t work with deadbolts. "

What makes you think it’s a deadbolt? Most closets don’t come with a lock, much less a deadbolt. The only doors with deadbolts are usually the ones that lead to the outside. Inside doors usually have those dinky easily pickable locks.

In this pic, the tab is a hollow (and probably “cheap”) “turn tab”. Probably made of a light and hollow metal, used as an “economy” alternative. Since the door was installed backward, it’s a chance that someone did a shoddy job in installing the lock mechanism… and the knob, as well.

I also wonder, especially since her dad taught her an impossible skill. But that would require Brad and Toni caring about this kid. Instead of any follow-up question, they throw her in front of a TV so they can get back to each other.

I think that was more a setup in re: forgetting that he had called his FD buddies, and facilitating the embarrassment of their barging in on Brad & Toni. :-) :-)

Let’s assume that if it was a deadbolt, the credit card trick would not have worked. The way the strip is drawn is just not an example of accurate technical illustration. As I want to see it, the door was fitted with some cheap doorknob mechanism.

While many parents try to slip some Mozart into their kids’ ears, to seem ‘cool’, or ‘with it’ or ‘intellectually superior’ as parents, this kid’s parents felt he should learn something that other kids could relate to. Especially with all the money to be made sabotaging, then fixing lockers later on…..

Let us now project out thoughts into the near future, when Brad & Toni are married. The question arises as to what will happen to TJ’s role in the strip— specifically, will he be written out? It is a fact in the “real world” that guys who are good friends usually drift apart when they get involved with women.
