Its the values the NRA teaches that are part of the problem. Then when you have the intolerant indiscriminately branding any liberal organization a “hate organization” you know this will continue and the nation has a problem.
When I was in high school, we did have occasional “gang fights”, and the most deadly weapon in use was bike chains, maybe, on rare occasions, someone could show up with a “zip gun”, home-made. There wasn’t easy access to firearms, and their numbers available in “the culture”, was more relative to “need”.
The NRA is the biggest promoter for the handgun industry of a “need” for handguns, and concealable weapons, that is based on the myth of “terror” and fear, that drives sales.
While, thanks to the NRA that doesn’t actually pay much attention to rifles or shotgun ownership anymore, the handgun, and “short weapon” (like MACs, and UZI) numbers are “out of the bag”, it doesn’t mean we can’t restore more controls on the increase. The “Brady Bill” was gutted by the simple fact the government cannot keep sales records for over 24 hours, but oddly, the NRA DOES keep those records, to drum up membership!
Yes, let us do away with such as social security and just let some 30 million of the senior citizens of this country (who paid into such a system all their hard working lives) just live in abject poverty until they die in the streets! Would any of you ultra conservatives now patting mskemple on the back be willing to even take care of your own elderly? Please, do not make me throw up, let alone laugh!!
As a socialist anarchist, I would like to maximize the ability of individuals to live their lives freely within communities. I see complex interactions among various levels, from the individual up to various local social and governmental groups and institutions and beyond to larger scale social and governmental institutions. The kind of socialist anarchism that I advocate tries to develop a comprehensive analysis of the power relationships at all levels; one of the weaknesses of libertarianism, for instance, as a social anarchist would see it, is its obsession with the limitation of government, when there are a lot of other social institutions which can be just as oppressive; at times, government is useful as a countervailing power against the oppressive power of other aspects of society. This sounds very abstract, but socialist anarchism is suspicious of too much abstraction and grows out of the examination of particular problems; it also tries to retain the flexibility to respond to differences rather than making a one-size-fits-all theory. I can get more specific, but this is enough for now.

The NRA is just as neutral as, well, Dick Cheney.

Is that an attempt to appear tolerant?

Apples are regulated by the FDA to make sure they aren’t toxic. Good thing James Madison didn’t mention them in the Bill of Rights.
