    @mskemple

    Do you suppose that they tried to use COBOL to write that web site?

    Again, we have the “logic” of faulting the ACA for its enrollment software, as if the two were, somehow, one and the same entity. And, of course, we also have someone with the usual one-liner about costs – that no one seems to have bothered to actually research.

    An interesting article in the “Daily Kos” – available to your computer free, if you want it – points out how the State of Kentucky is really finding the ACA beneficial; and is having quite a success in getting people to sign up, as are several other State enrollment projects. Even starting to “convert” some former Republicans who were previously strongly ANTI-everything, yet! And, another article compares ACTUAL COSTS, finding that some people are saving over $5,000+ a year on family insurance, with significantly LOWER deductibles, co-pay, and additional benefits for long term illness or injury formerly refused coverage.

    But, never mind. Something such as research means one actually has to THINK – and do more than just parrot the current versions of Chicken Little’s, “The sky is falling”, that are available to those for whom real THINKING is work – and work is a bad 4 letter word.

    If you hire experts to design your Web site, listen to their advice. Don’t be like the HHS people.

    What? I went to the federal site – it took my information and correctly referred me to my state site. Does that make me one of the ones who couldn’t sign up on the federal site? I. am. not. supposed. to sign. up. on. the. federal. site. So I went to my state site, entered name and address, etc, and was given how much my subsidy/tax refund would be and a long list of potential plans. Did anything not work? No. Before I comment on whether anything is broken, I have to know a firm definition of what “broken” means in this case.

    That would have been an improvement… Maybe they used FORTRAN or Basic 0.01

    “He is STILL on the G-S insurance, despite the aged reference to G-S insurance for illuminative purposes”

    So give a new link that shows you’re right. You’d ask the same of others.

    A friend works for what is now a contractor to Blue Cross, that doe MEDICARE: she’s a programmer in COBOL, still in use by many financial institutions. Bad programming is about as “new” and surprising as the sun rising in the morning.

    @cjsm,
    In point of fact, several Sates have excellent working enrollment facilities – Kentucky was particularly mentioned in “The Daily Kos” – which take care of any and all necessities that seem to be glitched up elsewhere. The Federal/National computer system may well need a thorough overhaul; but, that’s the COMPUTER SYSTEM, and NOT the ACA as such.

    I don’t know who is, or is not, “supposed to sign up on the Federal site”; but, that’s easy enough to learn the answer to, if one takes the time to look up alternatives. YOU are to be commended for your efforts to make things “work”, and for actually “working” at the research necessary to get the job done. THANK YOU for showing us an effective way to do it ourselves.
