Republicans are now accusing Democrats of trying to shut down the government. -Should we infer from that, that Republicans believe shutting down the government is a bad thing?-Side question: How many Republican legislators ran on a platform of shutting down the government?-And, of course, the same question that birthers seem afraid to touch: Is Rafael ‘Ted’ Cruz constitutionally eligible to be president of the U.S.?
What do you call it when a group of people with “malice aforethought” purposefully shut down the government, depriving 1,800,000 people of their paychecks in the middle of a depressed and high-unemployment economy, because no other dirty trick has been effective in preventing a duly-enacted law from going fully into effect, a law that has already saved lives or will assuredly save many more? What would the Democrats have been called if they had done this to stop some piece of Republican legislation or action? I try to keep an open mind. I try to understand various sides. I try not to get sucked into the maelstrom of polarization that has done so much harm in this country. But this! I may not always vote for Democrats (if there were better choices I never would) , but as long as the Republican Party remains what it is today, I not only will find it hard to vote for even a “good” Republican, I will find it hard to forgive anyone who does. Saying that the Democrats are equally responsible for this debacle is like saying that someone who refuses to hand over his wallet to a robber deserves what he gets.

Alarmists beware. Non-essential government services will be put on furlough. Government employees get a paid vacation. The web-cam of the panda at the national zoo is turned off. It’s all a dog-and-pony show designed to throw muck at the other side. Meanwhile the fat cats go out dining and drinking, lift their heads up and say “has enough time passed yet?” I for one welcome a little shut-down of non-essential government services. Maybe we’ll see just how truly non-essential they are.

Who cares if Cruz missle is eligible?!? The question should be about electability and that rocket isn’t leaving the launch pad. What’s interesting with this whole GovMent shut down is those holding out in Congress really have nothing to fear. Gerrymandered districts almost guarantee the current party in power in that district will remain in power. So those of us outside those districts who are less than thrilled with what’s going on don’t have any election recourse. That brings me back to that bottle rocket Cruz. Republicans are just damaging themselves when it comes to elections where they’re not the dominate party. Presidential and Senatorial elections are just those kinds of elections. Republican Congressmen (and woman) are killing their colleagues chances because disgruntled voters can take out their wrath in a venue where their vote makes a difference. It’s plain as day to me that the White House and Senate will remain in Democratic hands so long as Republicans in Congress continue their current behavior. Crus doesn’t stand a snowballs chance in hell!
Boehner won’t put it to an up-or-down vote because he knows he’d lose that, so his party is pulling the “you’re making us beat you up” ploy that was so popular in schoolyards around the country.

-I haven’t seen any experts even being asked, nor any court rulings. -The Constitution specifies that only a natural born citizen may hold the office. -Rafael Cruz was a Canadian citizen at birth. His renunciation does not make him a natural born citizen and neither does possession of an American passport. -Since you claim not to be a birther, I won’t bother you about this any more. We’ll disagree on his eligibility, but the courts will rule on that if it becomes necessary.-But, still, the birthers (not you) are absolutely silent.
Such venom, poorly placed. Facts: Most government workers get paid monthly, at the end of the month. Fact [New York Times]: in the past shutdowns they were retroactively paid. So assuming this only goes for a few days or even a couple weeks, they’ll get paid the same amount at the end of the month regardless. Fact: Republicans are the only ones attempting legislation to piecemeal military pay and reestablish some non-essential services. Fact: House and Dems are the ones not negotiating those specific services. Factual enough for you?
