I speak as a former Rennie who spent hundreds of dollars and hours on costumes, fair furniture, and miscellaneous fair stuff, just so I could dress up on a weekend and play Renaissance dances on my recorder.

There was an interesting Believe it or Not a few years ago. They said the modern combat soldier carries more and weighs more than the knights of the past. The Colt 45 was used in Viet Nam, it was just for stopping the enemy by taking piece/chunks off them. When I left the Forces, the M72 rocket launcher was the new anti personnel weapon.

Wait…. Renaissance Faire? Is that the medieval equivalent of “tomorrowland”?

Actually, they did have (more or less) Renaissance Faires in the middle ages. They called them “Round Tables”, and real kings and queens would dress up as Arthur and Guinevere and real knights as Lancelot, Gawain, etc.. The famous Round Table on display at Winchester Castle was built for one of these events by Edward I; the current paint job dates from when it was reused centuries later by Henry VIII.

Although there is some original artwork showing jousting with the right shoulders facing, that same artwork, as likely as not, also shows shields on the left shoulder, which makes no sense at all. Many period illustrations, in fact, seem to show the horses butting heads. Most likely explanation—medieval artists just weren’t very good.

are renaissance fairs nice??!!!!!….I’ve never been to one even though there’s one in Plantersville down the road from Houston every fall…do the horses really look disgusted or am I seeing things?!!!!!
