Typical Control Freak/Abuser..First the Punch, then the Apology and declaration of Undying Love. Then, sooner or later, another Punch….Because there’s Always another Punch.
It’s difficult to do in these situations since Bernice is apparently taken by him, but given Luann is “on” to him…I so hope she can discuss his behavior with her without being rebuffed! It could take a while with likely push-back on Bernice’s part, but planting the seeds in her head about what this appears to be wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.
Yes, since being introduced to “Peanuts” at a very young age, I take my comics seriously, and even if I know the characters are imaginary they’re very real to me! Especially strips like this that deal with very real-life situations.
This seems to be somewhat of a caricature. However, it’s still a little scary. I’ll bet Derek is largely copying the way men he looks up to treat women.

Derek is NOT Dirk. He is (perhaps) some better. .Maybe, keep reading and see. .However, Luann is on to him. Just as Brad was on to Dirk.

To me this is someone who can easily morph into an abuser – seems like he’s gone that way already. Ditch him NOW, Bernice!

He already IS an abuser. This is mental and emotional manipulation… i.e. abuse. No morphing required.

(Things like this brings out the social worker in me too – that’s hard to leave at work sometimes.) ;)
