Having spent a lot of my life as a newspaper reporter and editor, I’ll say what I always tell people: it’s in the news because it’s unusual. If it were commonplace, it wouldn’t be news.

Negative news is a ploy by the mainstream media to make everyone feel bad about themselves. The more negative news printed, the worse people feel. The worse they feel, the easier it is to “lead them to the promised land” with all the political BS on “how much better things will be” is we elect the “saviors” of the world (those backed by the media, of course – who continue the subversion).

Now please don’t tell I overheard Danae saying the above – she will try to sue me for stealing her lines.

Will Rogers said that if you don’t read the papers you are uninformed and if you do read the papers you are misinformed. It seems to apply even more to modern media ‘news’.

Yeah, sure, Omnius. All the democrats are honest and all the conservatives are corrupt…..in your fevered mind.

We live in a swamp and the news media is just as corrupt as the two major parties and the citizenry as a whole. Someone once said “don’t believe anything you read and only half of what you see.” In today’s world of photoshop and special effects films I would amend that to don’t believe anything you haven’t experienced yourself.

Not ONE? Not even THE ONE? Wiley was definitely in a bad mood when he drew this. I believe there are good people in government, but the majority, no. That said, deal making is the only way things get done, including the few things that we actually want done. “Fine words butter no parsnips.”

One of Kate’s problems is that she is WATCHING the news. TV is a horrible way of keeping informed. It is slick, shallow, and biased. I cannot think of a “news personality” on mainstream, cable, or public TV whose reportage I would accept at face value. The written word is much better, even in electronic form. Understand your source’s biases and shortcomings, and apply the appropriate filters. Kate would know all that, but a newspaper or laptop would be a less effective set up for her complaint.

Is Kate’s problem that even Republicans now call themselves the Stupid Party? That their complaint is that their members tell the truth about how corrupt and nasty they are, and the rest of us have been noticing, so the solution is to lie more?

Wiley, you just summed up my entire view of the news, government, and explained nicely why I never watch the news. Now I have to get this strip on a T-shirt so people will finally understand why I’m so bitterly cynical. Even in ignorance I feel no better; just less worse about things.

When I worked for a newspaper, a TV, it was hard to get any level of politician to tell the truth. They know what they wanted and only told the truth when they felt no one could stop them, no matter left or right. Either way, when they told the truth was the most scary part of the job, because if they really got their way… hooray for procedural rules that always interfered with them!!

Russell Peters has a really good bit on how the news media gives us a really skewed impression of other countries. For example, the impression many of us have of Middle Easterners are raving fanatics who go around blowing things up, because that’s all we see in the news. We don’t see everyday scenes of people going shopping, taking their kids to the park, etc., because that’s not newsworthy.
