Nicotine is addictive, and tobacco companies carefully regulate nicotine levels in cigarettes to keep consumers addicted. That’s why it’s so difficult to quit.

I quit in 1984. Had to quit drinkin’ too, as they’re tied together. Lost tonnage. Walked and ran everywhere. Quit the music biz (smoky bars and night-clubs) and still wound up with ‘a touch of emphysema’ as the MD describes it. Y’can’t win. At least I’ve outlived my emphysemic dad by 50 years. Small comfort.

Life is full of ironies. I began smoking around 11 or 12 years old. I was a 2-3 pack-a-day smoker when I quit 27 years ago. My lungs are clear and oxygen/blood levels are great today. My kid brother never smoked, yet he’s the one schlepping around an oxygen bottle at the moment..
