Re: your use of the word “smashing”; I’m 60 next year and I’ve never heard anyone use it in that context. I know what you mean (I’m not criticising) ’cos it was used in comics when I was a kid..I wonder if British people have similar ideas of what Americans are like? I know that the USA think we all talk like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
