Used to subscribe to a cable service that offered a
Romanian channel. Several times it showed a
commercial for a laundry detergent called BARF.
    [New and Improved, of course!].

Barf is made by an Iranian compani. Barf (baa-ruf) is Pharsi for snow.

I always thought ’barf ’ was onomatopoeic.

Do you think Van Gogh started this way. Or maybe Jackson pollack?

“barf” (verb): “to vomit or retch,” 1960, American English slang, probably imitative. Related: “Barfed”; “barfing”. As a noun, from 1966. “Barf bag” meaning “air sickness pouch” attested from 1966.
