I always thought ’barf ’ was onomatopoeic.

“barf” (verb): “to vomit or retch,” 1960, American English slang, probably imitative. Related: “Barfed”; “barfing”. As a noun, from 1966. “Barf bag” meaning “air sickness pouch” attested from 1966.

Not necessarily. “Fart” originally meant “went” — related to fare, ferry, etc. — and was a euphemism.

I was in a sales meeting with a new salesman named Ralph. He excused himself to the restroom. As we overheard from across the hall, there was a reason he was named Ralph.

BARF in the animal food world is an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. Usually ground up chicken for cats, chicken and veggies for dogs.

I used to do this sort of thing. Never to illustrate what Calvin is drawing, however.
