Transcript:
Evelyn: So...what brings you kids to Elderpark today? Randy: Jessica and I came because it's National Forgive Mom and Dad Day. Evelyn: Really? Jessica: Mom...I forgive you for the early curfew, and for not liking my first boyfriend. Evelyn: Oh, Jessica...how sweet. This is so healing. Evelyn: And Randy...are we okay about my throwing out all your comic books when I sold the house? Randy: You did what?

I didn’t take the chance of leaving my comics at my parents house, moved the whole collection several times over 20 years
Gave it to my son and he’s added to it, now its his problem to move it and store it
Should make him a nice chunk of change by the time he’s ready to retire

I never had comic books or anything of any particular monetary value thrown out by my parents after I moved out, but there were quite a number of things that seemed to just “disappear” and I never saw again (even when we cleaned out everything and sold the place after my parents passed on). Considering that they never seemed to throw out anything at all (Depression-era babies) it seemed surprising that some of my stuff was gone (I’m thinking models, some books, school papers, photos, a couple of old cameras, etc.). No one ever fessed up to tossing anything either, and I suspect my mother just forgot she did it (mostly she moved stuff around, trying to have efficient storage [too much stuff] but then would forget where it was moved to!).

My mom trashed all my baseball cards from the early to mid 50’s.

My mom believed that kids don’t really own anything, their adults are the real owners of all their stuff, and so she always felt free to go in my room and throw away anything, from earliest childhood all the way through college. Now she insists (dead serious!) that she never made a mistake with her kids and was the perfect parent, with nothing to be forgiven. And yet she actually wonders why she sees me so seldom.
