And it’s not the president. This has happened many times; as soon as there is any threat to any degree of oil supplies, the petrochemical industry IMMEDIATELY raises gas prices, even though it takes weeks or even months for the actual effect of a slowdown to be felt in cost terms. In other words, they jack up the price to get a higher profit. When things change, they delay lowering prices, again squeezing extra profit out.
Russia accounted for only 2% (that’s TWO PERCENT) of the US supply. Halting that very limited flow certainly does not justify doubling gas prices. But it is one more reason to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels generally and oil in particular.
The resurgence of sales of giant trucks and SUVs is not only short-sighted, it’s outright foolish, especially when you can get hybrid or even electric versions. When we needed a larger car to ferry our kids around, we got a Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It’s a seven-seat SUV, and it got the same gas mileage as our Toyota Camry sedan with a mere four-cylinder engine. Not bad, considering the Highlander’s curb weight is a full third greater than the Camry, and has a pretty perky drive.
