My grand father was an Inglewood policeman during WWII and up until the middle 1950’s. My sister and I lived with my grand parents almost all of that time. He kept his service .38 on the top of his chest of drawers in his and my grand mothers bedroom. I know this only because my grand mother had sent me to get him for dinner on several occasions. Of course, I always knocked and waited for permission to even enter their room, even if I knew he was there.
Knowing my grand father, (who was the finest man I ever knew) I know he would have kept it instantly ready at all times by keeping it loaded. I would never have even thought of going into his room if he was not there, let alone EVER touching something that was so important to him. I just would never have so dishonored that truly loving and great man under any circumstance. And he never had to even yell at me. He was not only my grand father, he was also my best friend while growing up. Good God, how I miss him!!
Some years later he very convincingly showed my sister and I just how powerful and dangerous such a hand gun could be by demolishing a 2 by 4 piece of timber with just a couple of shots. He then preceded to show us all about true gun safety. If more parents and grand parents thought as much about their children and grand children as he did, there would be far less tragic accidents in this country. And that is regardless of just how you feel about guns in general!!
