The Patriot (and/or The Perfect Storm) must’ve been the top movie at the original strip’s publication.

When my girls were 8 and 10, they learned about the Titanic in school. I decided to show them the movie (a lot of the props, and even the grand staircase, were made by the company that made them for the actual ship), watching it with them. Soon after, it was re-released in theatres in 3D, so my husband & I decided to take them. They absolutely loved it & told their friends about it. Our older daughter’s teacher heard them and scolded her, telling her that she was too young to have seen it: “I would NEVER take my children at your age to a PG-13 movie!” I’ll be honest: if we hadn’t watched it together at home first, we may not have…but since they’d already seen it…

But it stars Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, both delightful to look at in that film.

Remember the flap from Libs over the kids being given guns? Revisionist history began then…

Andy learned to ask about the movie ahead of time after Paige saw “Indecent Proposal.”

Really? I don’t remember “The Patriot” being all that violent, to be honest. Sure, a couple of scenes were rather bloody, but I would bet that the typical younger teen like Paige and her friend have already seen things just as bad. I don’t think it was one-tenth as intense as “Game of Thrones”, and I’m sure plenty of kids saw that. On top of this, there wasn’t any sex at all in The Patriot (that I remember) and that should strongly appeal to all those parents and other adults who are so intent on shielding children from the fact that there is a such thing as sex in the first place.

Parents should encourage their children to see movies like the Patriots. Cuba Libre, ya!
