The British monarchy has been emasculated to the point where it’s basically just a waste of space (and money), unlike the really nasty kings and queens of old, who were capable of doing serious damage and delighted in being able to demonstrate it. In the 21st Century, its main purpose is to provide the populace with somebody non-threatening at the putative top of the power structure, so the commoners can get mad at their politicians all they want without appearing unpatriotic, because they’re still (safely) loyal to the royals.
