This is obviously a very old strip, but back in the day you paid extra for a that because 90% of calls to Information were people trying to find somebody with a non-pub number. If all numbers were listed, Ma Bell wouldn’t need Information operators. Or at least not as many.
A police officer friend of mine didn’t want to pay the UL fee, so heput his phone in his wife’s maiden name. Any time some called and said “May I speak to Mr. Smith?” He would say “Sorry, not home.”
