Ahhh…just like a mid-life crisis to relive one’s dorky youth once more.

To put it into easily understood mathematical terms: One Direction < the Beatles; Lady Gaga ≠ Aretha Franklin; 60’s music > all other music. And that’s the lesson for today. This will be on the midterm, people, so take notes.

There were some great bands that emerged in the late 70s and early 80s, like the Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Go-gos, Blasters, Cramps….but they all were pretty much done by 1983. I can’t think of a single act that has contributed anything significant to popular music since.

i’ve been listening to pop since the 40’s, and was fortunate to, as a teenager, watch rock n roll get born. every decade has great stuff. the 80s-they might be giants, sonic youth, REM, new wave, joy division, 90s, nirvana, green day, magnetic fields, wu-tang clan, public enemy… i’m recording a song for each year of the 20th century, and my only prob with the 80s/90s is so much good stuff to choose from and so much that i haven’t heard. one month of the 90s has way more releases that all of 1970. my daughters are a big help with recent music. BTW the most recent group-duo actually-that knocks me out is shovel and rope.

You are so right. You can hear a song from that period and remember all the words. To me, most of the music today sounds alike and it feel that not much thought goes into it.

80’s is probably my least favorite music decade from 50’s-now, along with the ’00’s

I may have been born in the 90s, but the 80s fascinate me. I’m personally listening to a lot more 80s music to distance myself from all these insipid memetic tunes that are out there.

Every decade has its oddball hits- the streak, chipmunks, knight in rusty armor, etc. I spent most of the late 70’s-early 80’s listening to country or ACTUAL rock-and-roll(probably Bob Seger era oldies.) I haven’t found anything that excites me on a consistent basis since. Gaelic Storm, Pink, but again not every CD. Currently have Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads, as well as a small collection of Doc Watson (RIP).

Many have already said it well, but the 80’s were, well, AWESOME!! The musical variety was fantastic and really encompassed what the previous decades started. As Sirius XM says, “We love the 80’s!”

The 60s, 70s and 80s were my growing up & coming of age years…and my parents both had backgrounds in music. My grandmother was a torch singer in the 30s and 40s. My uncle played in Mickey Gilley’s house band. Music was an every day thing for our house. The 60s..SOME was decent. The 70s. Eh. The 80s, like someone said before, took the best and mixed them up. The 80s music was mostly upbeat, happy, danceable stuff. I loved it. I wouldn’t agree that nothing has been original since, though. Guns N Roses, and Nirvana, from the late 80s & 90s, Pearl Jam, even Linkin Park. But my daughter, now 15? She says most of todays music is crap. There is some she likes…but for the most parts, she likes the oldies—and the way oldies, to her, anyway.
