Thank goodness I didn’t have Ruthie guiding my first trip to the library. My mom took me when I was 7. It was one of the old Carnegie biblio-palaces and smelled of books and magic and far-away places. I checked out a foot-high stack of 1/4 inch thick kids books every time we went and began a life-long love affair with both books and libraries. I was always too busy reading to make much noise—nobody had to shut me up.
A least you all got to go to library when you were kids. My mom never took sister and I to one more so during summer time. Living in town I did no know there was a library, when school started I did. During summer time no books to read. No book mobile either. At my moms neighbor there is activity center for public not sure when that was built and I did not know there is a vey much smaller version of library that will be closing.
The library was a wonderful place as a kid. Nice comfy old chairs. I would get my kid book and go to the adult section to read sitting in an old comfy chair. The old one I used to go to is still there with the large stone exterior, marble steps and nice wood work inside
Farm kids with an attic full of books, the nearest liberry 18 miles away? Had to do it the hard way.. Shed full of old newspapers and their comics, pestering Ma ’what’s that word?’while reading Prince Valiant, Maggie and Jiggs (Bringing Up Father) and comics of the era. Good times..good times..
