The best hardware stores are always the small, locally-owned ones. They operate on the old retail model of “the customer is always right”. as opposed to the newer Walmart based model of “give the customers cheap crap and treat them like dirt.” Unfortunately, the latter is driving the former out of existence.

This has happened to me more than once. Home Depot and Lowe’s stock lots of stuff, but I find that when you need a small specialty item, you are a lot more likely to find it at a smaller hardware store. Ace Hardware may be a nationwide chain, but they are run more like a mom & pop operation and I haven’t been disappointed yet when I need that little widget.

That’s why I love our local family owned Ace Hardware. They’re staff is wonderfully helpful. Nice friendly service that I came to know as I grew up.
