Cats aren’t allergic to milk, they can sometimes have lactose intolerance. You shouldn’t give chocolate to dogs, however.

By the way, who knew cats liked chocolate? No wonder we get along so well. :D

I love this comic.I guess Oliver isn’t the brightest of them all. Then again maybe he is. After all he has to taste the cocoa frequently to make sure it is right, doesn’t he?

“That’s nice of them.” Really? Think about it: for the next two and a half centuries you’ll be making cocoa (and serving it to) nine finicky cats. It was the way “commissioner” sounded that made you feel honored and important. Think again, Oliver!

Chocolate is harmful to both cats and dogs. But cats are a lot less likely to eat it, because they don’t have the same taste response to “sweet” as dogs do.

A very little bit of chocolate on rare occasions (like a random chocolate kiss, which is 1/6 oz) won’t do them in. For a 5 pound cat (that’s about the size of my cat), 1/2 to 1 oz of milk chocolate will give them diarrhea and vomiting. Anything more than an ounce requires immediate medical intervention. 1.5 oz can result in rapid heart rate (tachyarrhythmia), diarrhea and vomiting. 2 oz is potentially lethal.

Hot cocoa is a lot more potent. A cup of hot cocoa contains only 1/2 oz of cocoa powder, but as little as 1 oz of hot cocoa can be harmful. If a cat in the real world were to drink a full cup of hot cocoa, it would be fatal.

If your cat gets into the candy dish, there’s a handy calculator you can use to estimate whether the amount of chocolate your cat ate is dangerous. https://www.omnicalculator.com/biology/cat-chocolate-toxicity
