“Dark side” referred to the side away from the earth, not something in perpetual darkness. When the Soviets managed to get pictures, it was so different from the side we see that there were constant “exposés” of how it was faked – until we got photos and found it really was different. Of course, there are still those who hate science and claim the whole field is fake.

Actually, when the outer planets are closest to the moon, they do see the dark side—since they are opposite the sun from the moon at that point.

Oddly, though, when we on Earth are facing the dark side, it’s not a full moon, but a new one.
