Gramma Evie: What are YOU doing this summer, Holly? Holly: Mom signed me up for basketball camp. Gramma Evie: Basketball camp for girls...that still AMAZES me. I guess 40 years of Title IX has paid off. Holly: Title who? Gramma Evie: I don't know whether to love or hate that you don't know.

Sigh… I know what you mean, Evie. Those coming up behind us have no idea (and little appreciation) how much we had to do to get here – and yet, maybe it’s good that they don’t have to fight so hard for it…

Funny thing is, basketball has ALWAYS been both a girls’ and boys’ sport, since it was first invented.

In the late 80’s, early 90’s – there was no soccer for girls. My town got a summer club set up for them and after five years, the school finally stepped up to let them have soccer at school. Before that, the girls had to play with the boys, riding the same bus but able to use the staff locker room to change in. One of my daughters was one of the few that would play right up with the “boys”. It was not easy for her to be picked on but I love seeing the girls have their own locker rooms now.

I suspect:A: Paying attention to what congress is trying to do.B: Drinking alcohol is hardly an automatic death sentence.

I was four when that law passed, so, yeah, I had to look it up. With the exception of sexual politics on the playground, I just always assumed that girls were allowed to play any sport they were interested in at school.

It’s a good thing. Girls should have the same opportunities as boys. Love it, Evie, but educate her that it wasn’t always this way. It’s good to know the past.

Some religious people get very hung up on denying other people the “sins” of the flesh while steeping themselves in sins of the soul — bitterness, bigotry, anger, self-righteousness, greed, jealousy and blasphemy (presuming that they speak for their god).

A woman I know in Portland, OR, plays women’s soccer with a bunch of friends during off hours. One of the players, who keeps up very well, is seventy-three!

I remember a girl back from then that was the first girl to play on the boy’s Little League baseball team. Later on, she would be fthe first female firefighter hired by her department, and would later become the first female paramedic.
it’s not always about things as trivial as sports.

Nice ridiculously cheap shot, there, buster.

@paintermanTry Arizona, where a high school baseball team forfeited a championship game because their opponent’s team included a girl. They received an outpuring of support from the Christian evangelical community (and ridicule from the rest of the country). Oh, and this wasn’t in the distant past. It was last month.

Well said Evie!

Huh? Basketball has been a girls’ sport almost from it’s invention.

And if there is no girl team girls have to be given the chance to try out for the boys’ team. And vice versa. A lot of schools will have volleyball for girls but not boys so if a boy wanted to play volleyball he would have to be able try out for the girls’ team. A good movie about this is Gracie about a girl who wants to play soccer in the early days of Title IX. Another cute one is Disney’s Quarterback Princess about a girl who plays on the football team under Title IX.
