The Call to arms Barack Obama: Lo! I beseech ye, young Americans! Join my glorious crusade to keep interest rates on Stafford student loans at 3.4% rather than rising to 6.8%. Man 1: I leave thee for how long I know not, perhaps even to perish, in the noble struggle to keep interest rates on Stafford Student loans at 3.4% Woman: How can you waste time here? All else pales next to the need to prevent Stafford student loans from exceeding their present interest rate of 3.4%! Man 2: Where is everyone? Keep what's left of hope and change alive- drop everything! Join the crusade to keep the Stafford student loan interest rates at 3.4%!

I’m sensing the tiniest bit of sarcasm here.

Aw, c’mon. You do what you can, when you can. You pick your fights. In this political climate, if we can’t stop them from doubling the interest rates on student loans, how long before they want to raise them to 10.2%? Or 13.6? What if the loans at issue were home loans, or small-business loans?
Who has the greatest interest in keeping higher education unaffordable? Who has been saying “Some people shouldn’t go to college?” Cui bono?

Sorry Ted. No love on this one. It’s not an either or situation here. Helping students afford a higher education doesn’t necessarily come at the expense of either caring about or helping those who are less fortunate. Affordable higher education is essential to both individuals trying to better themselves and to our society as a whole. I have absolutely no problem with making sure it stays affordable. In fact, I’ll go even further, it should be an intergenerational covenant. As the saying goes, “If you think an education is expensive, try ignorance.”

Instead of subsidizing RICH OIL COMPANIES, why not help our students? It’s a matter of priorities, don’tcha know. Just ask any Republicant.

In which we divine how little substance there ever was in any of his rhetoric. Obama missed his calling as a used-car salesman. I guess the (sick) joke is on us.

Good point Ima. The point of this is a bit off. I’m thinking that the point is, is to keep the interest rate lower at ALL colleges, not just at stafford.

Of course I want college grads to pay lower interest rates. Actually, I think college ought to be free for those qualified to be admitted. Education shouldn’t be a business.
My point is, why does the president emphasize these micro-mini issues while ignoring huge ones (poverty, torture, foreclosures, joblessness, homelessness)?

Meh, it already costs too much for me to go. My I.Q. of 168 and stellar test scores mean nothing if I don’t have money.BTW, did you know that colleges get a kickback from credits card companies if their students rack up debt on their cards because of college?
