And as the NRA prefers that terrorists and mentally ill people have free access to guns over imposing ANY kind of legal restraint, don’t expect these killings to disappear anytime soon.

Florida has an estimated 900,000 guns and the mentally ill are elected until term limits kick them out.

So what? You want to disarm the populace so only criminals have weapons? Remember that bank robbery where the police were using civilian weapons against the military weapons the thieves had? Do you think those criminals found these weapons in a crate that fell off a truck?

Here’s a thought experiment: take all those people who say “guns don’t kill people,” give them knives, even swords, and put them in a contained space. Now put in an equal number of people, armed with semiautomatic weapons and lots of ammo, who think guns DO kill people — and don’t let anyone out until half of them are gone. Any bets?

Even dismissing the “mental illness” thing, we’re offing over 30 people a day with guns, at least half are homicide. Worst record in the world for “Industrialized” nations.

Wow, Zippy is off his rocker.

By the way, Breen is the local preferred opinion columnist for the San Diego Union Tribune. He is no liberal, as the whack-cons here are trying to imply.

“200M*88M/300M = number of mentally ill people with privately owned firearms in the US.” WOW!! Please show this statistical equation to ANY High School Math Teacher. …You will be very surprised at their assessment!!!

Then someone isn’t doing their job. Mentally unstable peopleare not allowed to legally own a firearm. Besides I would rather be able to defend myself against anyone & anything than worry about a few crazies.

“register car and drivers license…I’ll be happy if we can get those basic requirements for firearms” AGREED!! And when a nut is certified, the national records can be accessed to see if he is at the same address as Guns are.

Wrongswrong also cites the other NRA number touted all the time. Of course space aliens from Zontar flying by our planet on their daily trip to collect hydrogen from our sun prevented over 300 million crimes every day by spreading pixie dust!

“…mentally ill are not supposed to have guns…” YES, some have access to guns. AND Convicted Felons are also not supposed to have guns. I haven’t seen a good way to clean-up those two situations.

“…It was meant to show that the connection is in the numbers…” What you want is a VENN Diagram that shows the intersection of gun possessors (not owners) and American Psych Assoc estimate of the number of SERIOUSLY mentally ill people (which is less than 88 million). I do not have enough information to compute the probabilities. It is a worthy question that I would approve spending my tax $ on.
