Don’t ya just love it when ideology trumps reasonableness and recognition of the value of community. The myth of the rugged individualist has obscured our recognition of the social contract.
I’ve read the Declaration of Independence a number of times. Which fundamental human right are you espousing is being given short shrift? There is no fundamental right to healthcare, only the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Life does not equal healthcare.
many 5-4 decisions have been overturned by later courts. it takes time. the list is long too. slavery was upheld at one point.
now if you want to utilize slavery in your capitalist business, you merely hire it off-shore and bring the finished goods back here. It made apple the biggest company in the world. does anyone really believe apple is bigger than exxon mobile?
Interesting, “single payer” DOES make more sense, and IS more in keeping with the Constitution than mandating the purchase of a PRIVATE product, controlled by CORPORATIONS, not the “people” OR “government”.
BTW, the “Declaration of Independence” is NOT a “legal” document in the United States, and actually has nothing to do with the actual government that was founded. ONLY the Constitution is the supreme law of the land.
This is the last act. The first was Obama repeatedly promising that all health care debates would be broadcast on Cspan. And then he said nothing at all when Pelosi and Reed forged the thing behind locked doors. Now the Democrats receive their just reward in the end.
Nobody ever fails in the pursuit of deadness. The opponents of this law are doomed (as we all are) to need medical care sometime. Europeans understand this fact , and red-staters don’t.

Good cartoon, as usual per Tom Toles. And two great comments, too.

The “Declaration” didn’t bring us freedom, the Revolutionary War, and War of 1812 did. The Constitution, is the foundation for “law”.

the Affordable HealthCare Act might finally move us from rewarding an illness care system toward a system of incentives for preventive care & wellness
