1. Democrats are not fascists.2. You are correct that Democrats enacted most of the Jim Crow laws; but those people and those politicians have moved to the Republican party, thanks to specific efforts by Nixon, Reagan, and others.3. Voter fraud is a fraud. No, the Democrats do NOT want to engage in that, and actual data indicate that it is trivial at most.4. EXCLUDING legitimate voters, however, is a real and pressing problem. And this is what this cartoon is about. You’re welcome.
The defenders of the voter ID laws wrap themselves in a blanket of sanctimonious concern for the “integrity of the ballot.” Rogers’ cartoon reveals their true identity, partisan and racist agents scheming to reduce voter turnout among people of color, the working class and poor, the disabled and college students, i.e. any group not expected to vote Republican.
Campaign promises are not what can always be done. The guy came in to a brutal resession, and a house full of congressmen who swore to Mitch McConnell to do any and every thing to cause his failure. He isn’t a miracle worker!
The “Dixiecrats” became today’s southern Republicans, and have filled the halls with con-dumbs. Which, look back at Reagan’s boys, like Nixon’s, and think CONvicts, but Reagan had appointed more judges to reverse his folks’ convictions.
To understand this you would have to understand American History. Obviously onguard, josefw, Theo Poser, Dr Who, etc either were not paying attention in class, or prefer the alternate version created by conservative talk radio.
The Republican part was founded over 150 years ago; one of it’s core values was the abolition of slavery, an ideal most of us would accept. Abraham Lincoln was the first member of the Republican party to be elected President. Due to the efforts of Lincoln and and many others, slavery WAS abolished, at least in name. As a wise person might surmise, this created a great deal of animosity in the south toward Republicans.
For nearly 100 years it was nearly impossible for a Republican to get elected in the South. The former slave owners joined the Democratic party, but maintained their own ideals, to the point they were often known as Dixiecrats. And under their leadership a number of discriminatory voting practices were instituted, often referred to as Jim Crow Laws.
This cozy relationship broke apart with Johnson’s Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Northern Democrats and some Republican allies overrode the wishes of the Dixiecrats and banned the discriminatory voting practices. This resulted in many of the Dixiecrats (descendents of slave owners) switching to the Republican party.
And once again they are trying to disenfranchise those who do not have the same background.
