Even though Gunther is shy around Rosa, I think it is just because he is intimitated by the fact that she could be a real, FIRST girlfriend. Gunther is nervous, but he is very self confident. He likes who he is and is not going to change for anyone. It is refreshing. Luann, however, has the self esteem of a geranium. I stopped enjoying “Cathy” because every time a guy looked at her she screamed “ack!” and ran away. This is what Luann is doing. But at least she is just a teen, not an adult like Cathy. Still… she is going to be Cathy if she doesn’t chill a bit.

let’s see…if you take luann’s face in the third panel and stretch it lengthwise a bit…skew it slightly…then you’ll end up with greg’s pastiche on a famous painting…

Luann and Rosa just need to take matters into their own hands, so to speak.

Nice way to talk about your friend there in panel 1, Gunther. You had to set up the bit, though. Will Luann’s moment of self-realization amount to anything life-changing? —Probably not.

The SAME goes for YOU, Gunther, only if you could HEAR your own words. Insecurity and lack of confidence make you less attractive! Practice what you preach.

You’re missing the joke. Gunther says Luann should stop putting herself down, because it makes her less beautiful. After acknowledging that Gunther is right, Luann immediately puts herself down again. Gunther is seen rolling his eyes in the last panel.

Also, Luann is beautiful in Gunther’s eyes, and in Quill’s. Notice that Gunther says “less beautiful” to describe the result of Luann putting herself down.

And LUANN – you are dumb. It is a GIFT when a guy, especially a TEEN boy, manages to look beyond the physical beauty and sees the PERSON. Quill is a GIFT and you fail to see it. You see him ignore Tiffany. And yet you question it? It is very significant that he ignores Tiffany, unlike zillions other guys at Pittsville High. Maybe you don’t DESERVE him.

I’m not a fan of tattoos, but today’s strip would be great for the back of a hand for most adolescent women … of any age.Gunther does a perfect eye roll!

I like Gunther’s comment today, he seems to know a lot about other couple’s but can’t realize he should follow his own advice.

I think Luann is making fun of Gunther, as if trying to make him see he is just as bad in putting himdelf down as she is…thus the exaggerated reaction. She’s saying GUNTHER is dumb…lol

Poor Luann. As far as she is concerned, beauty is only skin deep. She finally hooks the cute guy she has been dreaming about her whole life and all she can do is question why. If you were fishing with a person using better bait, and you caught the bigger fish, would you give it to them because they derserved it more? You competed with Tiff to win Quill. You won. Move on to step two.

The schools now teach you should feel good about yourself as a basic human right divorced from reality. Consider panel three what happens when such a child finds they are unemployable and there is no reason anyone would have anything but a veneer of friendship for them because they wasted the first quarter of their life listening to fools.

Gunther needs to go get at Rosa before she goes off to college and majors in chicano studies than ends Up hating Gunther and calling him The Evil White Man who stole land. ..Anyways Did Shannon Daytona Die or something?

Nice observation, Firedome. I’d never realized “The Scream” was merely teenaged angst.Here’s an idea: remember how they used to line us up in alphabetical order as kids? What if Mr. Fogarty does that to this group— we’d have Berniece, Delta… Quill, Rosa… They realize all they have in common— an international history, moving, adjusting to new schools— and they pair up.

It is time for Luann to gain self confidence. The self efacing has become old and will get her nowhere fast. Greg, time for a little growth in this character!

People who are constantly putting themselves down are asking for attention and constant reassurance, but the attention they should get is what Gunther did – tough love – it hurts, but it should help.

Tiff and Luann match school wise???????? Luann is a “C student” while Tiff is a “D student” ONLY because teachers feel sorry for her, only one who matches Tiff is knute, and only because he is lazy, not dumb

I think Gunther is about to have an “Ahaa!!!” moment, and finally grow a pair….

You missed the point. Teen boys ARE dumb – ruled by hormones and pretty faces. QUILL is a gift because he sees past the pretty face, sees LUANN, drab girl, and LIKES HER. He is not interested in TIFFANY, the pretty girl because she is an empty person. Typical teen boys fail to see that – they only see a pretty face and do NOT CARE if Tiffany has nothing to OFFER besides a pretty face.

All Luann can think of is “why is Quill NOT interested in Tiffany? Why is he intrested in drab ME?” Forget that, girl, and FOCUS on the fact that he LIKES YOU!! He SEES you, drab and all.

i didn’t read all the comments, but it seems to me that Luann and Gunther make a great couple. Maybe in a few years they will mature into each other.

The trouble with Luann is that Tiffany has defined beauty as looking like Tiffany, and Luann has accepted it. (So did Aaron Hill!)

Luann likes Gunther because he’s good for her ego, but there’s no chemistry. She really wants a pretty boy that’s just as dumb as she is, but treats her like a trophy girlfriend.

I think it’s not right for Gunther to be pointing fingers at Luann… It’s true, I’m self concious, and many people have told me that "men don’t like women who aren’t self-assured, well what am I supposed to do- do a whole brain revamping? My self-conciousness is a part of me, and it’s very hard to get rid of…

Ah, in these two would only listen to each other.But that’s what growing up is about.
