Arnold: Evie: Did you say yes? No? You'll marry me...or not? Gramma Evie: NOT! We barely know each other! Gramma Evie: But I AM interested in spending more time with you here in Haiti, building houses. Crowded tents, cold showers, weird bugs and all. Gramma Evie: It still beats the heck out of schlepping through some mall. Arnold: I'm...um...flattered.

Like daughter, like mother. Is Joan the only one in that family with any sense of romance?

Evie is a sensible lady; she can have romance without the strings attached to marriage. Not a good idea to rush into marriage in your senior years.

As I said a few days ago, she is more concerned about his next project among the widows who need houses and new husbands.

I think Evie likes the romance of traveling to exotic places to help rebuild, but still likes the comfort of going home to regroup.

where is the guy on the ladder??
dunner99rok over 12 years ago
Arnold’s gone. He’ll do his job in Haiti and go onto his next place, but the invitation for Evie to join him will never materialize. There are plenty of older women who will enjoy his company elsewhere.

At least she’s interested enough to stay!!

With the way he proposed, I think that’s a reasonable response.

Yes, and as JoanHelen said, at their age they don’t need marriage to enjoy each other’s company, take it a day at a time and finish in Haiti before deciding on the next.

If we don’t hear from Arnold again, it won’t be because Evie turned down his marriage proposal, it’ll be because he’s moved onto the next place that needs houses built. Both of them have their own lives and their own passions, and they’re doing what they want to do, not what someone else wants them to do. Bravo to that!

I don’t think Evie is hesitant about marriage so much as the transient life of building houses where they are needed. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

She’s telling it like it is, and if they get to know each other well enough for things to change, then they will. I suspect the Arnold and Evie story will continue.

There are many more houses to build, days to share, and strips to be drawn. This isn’t over by a long shot.

Just marry him already, Evie!

what a great match!

She probably felt just as flattered by his manner of proposing. Hey! They’re perfect for each other, after all! :)

I think they are well suited. Both are nonchalant when it comes to stating commitment to each other.

We take romance where we can find it.

My mother has already found someone new after her breakup with her boyfriend of 11 years. I salute her, and salute Evie.

Remember, Arnold is quite a bit younger than Evie. I seem to remember that she’s had some health issues in the past. Perhaps in the back of her mind is the thought that she may need serious medical help some day – not always easy ……It’s great for now, but she has to think about the future because no one will do it for her….

Marriage is over rated. Once is enough.

Yes, he should be flattered…maybe? :-D
