Yeowch. Well, the Iraq war was started by chickenhawks who dodged the Vietnam War but were apparently willing to send OTHER people’s children — especially poor ones — to die for their oil policies, or, if you prefer, for their geopolitical maneuverings. Or their testosterone levels.
A lot of people saw what was wrong with the War in Vietnam, but it took years to bring that to an end. Did everyone simply forget what happened there? Is there no sense of history? Are we fated simply to be the pawns of interests which have no concern for human lives, even the lives of their own citizens? (But money has no nationality.) I heard Mrs. Clinton the other day remark that the US used to intervene when anti-US governments were elected, often with bad results. (She was explaining why the US isn’t going to intervene in the mid-East if the “wrong” government gets elected here or there.) I was amazed to hear that from the highest level of the US government, and it gave me some hope. I was never a big fan of Bill Clinton, but I have to say he did moderate US foreign adventures, and I think Obama has done the same. For all their faults, the current Democrats are less likely to get us involved in stupid foreign wars than the Republicans, and more likely to have some small awareness of the real economic and environmental problems we face. I’m no liberal, but the Democrats remain the only practical choice.
In ‘Nam, we saved many multiple amputees (including a number of my friends) who would have died in WW II. In Iraq, we’ve brought home many with severe head trauma (including some of my, and more of my son’s, friends) who would have died in ‘Nam (where we couldn’t save them). This has tremendously INCREASED the $$$ cost of our wars, yes this one indeed started by chickenhawks. It should be noted that while indeed Clinton DID have a Rhodes scholarship, and a high draft number also, he did NOT send out troops into senseless wars. Well, of course, nobody put out a contract on his daddy, and we were getting the oil we desired at the time, including from our own leases.
What I’ve learned since ’Nam that is more distressing than merely war for false premise, is that profit trumps all, and those willing to sacrifice the lives of others, without risking their own, are even stronger, with more power, and less responsibility for their acts. Sam needs to get up from that chair, and stomp the living “defecation” out of them all!

It’s easy to forget with an all volunteer force. If the draft was still around it would jolt a lot peoples memories.
