Interestingly enough, my first McCaffrey wasn’t a Pern novel, but instead The Rowan.

I loved her work.

I don’t think Anne McCaffrey would approve of that. She was a very nice person.

@Lynne B: maybe so, but her Maj has a point. Paolini’s work is really nothing more than fafic, with elements taken from others’ work. Terry Brooks for this generation.

The only book of hers I’ve read was “The Ship Who Sang”. Very sad to hear the news. I’m bracing myself for the day I hear about Ray Bradbury.

I thought Paolini’s work was more ripped off from Star Wars …

I didn’t know. The PERN series was the first I ever collected completely and read frequently. May the bards sing her home to her weyr.

Aw I loved Anne McCaffrey’s Reads!!! Her Pern novels were my first rides in Sci-Fi. Just got done reading “The Ship Who Sang” series.

Pern was classic, some of her others better, or not.Never heard of Paolini, sounds like I didn’t need to.I found Rouling derivative, though I can’t remember who wrote the previous wizards’ boarding school.

@Night-Gaunt, I read the Ship That Sang when it first was published, I too will miss Anne. I am glad to hear someone remember Keith Laumer; I still believe his A Trace of Memory was one of the finest SF stories ever…

Rowling was like using piles of potato chips to make a four-course meal. No depth. Like Dungeons and Dragons. Roll the dice to see what random magical creature shows up next.Tolkien was the ‘alpha and omega’ of the genre.

McCaffrey was very good however, in that she found a unique niche. Pern was both Science Fiction AND Fantasy.
