Unfortunately, probably all too true. This eye-for-an-eye crap has got to go.

“Waddayawant? They’re Arabs.” Well, I’ve said it here before & I’ll say it again, in much of the world, and certainly the Arab world, the model for democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch. Sadly, that idea of democracy seems more and more to apply to our own, especially Teabagger, notions of democracy. A rather too universal human instinct I fear…

Will the rebels who risked life and limb to over-throw Gaddafi be working to set up democracy, or will they be saying, “It’s now my turn.” Three guesses.

Religion and revenge are synonymous, at least with the “bible religions”.

An eye for an eye was the Law of the Old Testament, but Grace outshines the Law in the New Testament.By Grace we are forgiven and by Grace we are to forgive.

i used to have such tremendous respect for Mr. Oliphant and his work. Especially during the 80’s, Mr. Oliphant’s comics about the juntas and the fallacies of the Monroe doctrine where the creative, well composed and biting standard everyone knew they had to live up to. i look back on them now and know the goal has always been to provoke thought and spare no one, and that has inspired generation(s) of cartoonists and commentary. These shallow, poorly composed racial stereotypes about Arab people and Islam are trash and you know it Mr. Oliphant. You’ve always been bashed for your depictions of this or that group, but you’ve always been able to defend yourself on the merit of your creativity and intellectual insight. We can see, Mr. Oliphant, that you clearly have nothing important to say anymore. You and we both know the quality of these cartoons shows that you are a relic. Retire and salvage your legacy.

Let’s hope the new leaders of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, et al, realize that stability is more likely to give them true freedom than revenge. The former Soviet nations that chose to avoid revenge & bloodshed have fared better than those that had bloody purges.

@ Shek Yerbouti- " In the days of the Caliphate, it was quite usual and expected for the lowest goatherd to request an audience with the caliph and tell him to his face what he was doing wrong, all with respect and safety."

Umm, source for that? The Caliphs were as varied a group as western monarchs. Some were just, some were not. Some were interested in the plight of common citizens, some were not. All were surrounded by the layers of bureaucracy that all rulers find themselves surrounded by. Maybe one goat herd in thousands would get an audience before the Caliph as a token gesture.

I’m sensing that RCMinor is perhaps a wee bit miffed and is taking it out on a particular religion.I’m not flagging but I wonder how long the posts will remain up. There are now about a dozen posts designed to coax a nasty reaction. Ho hum.

Considering that we now know that A. they will implement Sharia (which will only end up in them having to be “freed” later on ofc). B. Gadhafi was shot in “revenge”. and C. Lots of his supporters have been found executed in graves now this it pretty much accurate depiction of things atm.

Shame, Mr Oliphant, shame. This really isn’t a far cry from “the only good Arab is a dead Arab”. After more than 40 years of domination, such a blanket condemnation of an entire people, is really unworthy, not to say unhelpful of you. Treat people like thieves and they act like thieves.
