My guess is three of many tentacles of a much larger creature.

Sand-pokey things indicating another underground city?

Doesn’t anyone else think panel #1 is the view through a periscope? Or is that just Wally’s view through the binoculars. Yeah, I suppose that’s it.

Maybe Mallard sent some crawlers with them as backup.

Looking at the last panel I can’t help but notice that yes, there are three things, however, Flask is far to the right and above (from the panel’s perspective), and the three things are pointing directly at Holly and Wally, whose backs are the only ones immediately facing them. They are obviously moving, so Flask could always be a target. Those were my thoughts, though.

All three of the tentacles are converging on the guy with the empty backpack. Having an empty backpack on an expedition across the Great Waste is suspicious. It means that he’s the sneaky one and must be up to something!
