As a city boy, I consider cow tipping a urban legend (rural idiocy) told to us by Aggie students from the state university to fool us city slickers. Then again———-

Yes, Lew, it’s a myth. I’ve lived on a farm with cattle for over 40 years, and I’ve never once seen one sleep standing up. Some horses sleep standing up, but cattle lay down to sleep. And obviously if an animal sleeps standing up, its brain continues to maintain its balance, so a gust of wind or an annoying city kid can’t tip it over.

When I first went to North America I got very annoyed and confused by the way taxes work. In Australia we have 10% tax on everything, but it is included in the price, so we are able to go up to the checkout with the correct change in hand. Oh yeah, we also don’t tip, except for incredibly good service. Our restaurant owners are proud to actually pay the waiters enough. I’ve heard that in New Zealand, some waiters and waitresses will actually get angry if you tip. “Don’t bring that nasty American weirdness here, otherwise our employers will start expecting us to receive tips and start paying us less”.
